Finding and Starting Work

Finding and Applying for Employment

  • Huskies Get Hired
  • Many campus departments have job postings on their webpages.
  • Once you submit an application, the department will contact you if they want to interview you. If you are offered the job, the department will help you complete the hiring paperwork.
  • Once you are offered a position on campus, you will be required to verify your eligibility to work through the I-9 process. Part of this process includes uploading and having verified identity and employment eligibility verification documents. If you don’t have these documents readily available on campus, consider making arrangements to obtain them so you have them when you need them for the hiring process.

Steps all student employees must take before starting work at NIU

You need to complete four important steps once you have been offered a student employment position at NIU. You cannot start work until these steps are completed. You will receive an onboarding email to your NIU student email account with your employee ID (A-ID) and temporary password, as well as links to the I-9 employment eligibility form and onboarding documents.

    Section 1 of your I-9

Your first step is to complete Section 1 of the I-9 Employment Eligibility Verification form and upload all necessary verification documents before your first day of employment. Any delay in completing this step will result in your start date being moved to the next pay period.

Tip: Make sure you have the acceptable identity and employment eligibility verification documents in an electronic format ready before you start the I-9 form.

    Onboarding

Login to the NIU Onboarding Portal using your A-ID and temporary password you received in your onboarding email. In the portal, you’ll complete the required hiring forms to begin your employment at NIU.

  • 3

    Orientation Module

After you complete the forms in the Onboarding Portal, you will be automatically directed to the NIU online orientation module. You must acknowledge that you have reviewed the information presented in each step to complete the module.

    Section 2 of your I-9

Meet in-person with an authorized NIU representative to complete Section 2 of the I-9 form. You must present for physical verification the original, unexpired identity and employment eligibility documents you uploaded in step one.

You may stop by either the main Human Resource Services Building at 1515 West Lincoln Highway in DeKalb, or the HRS satellite office in Lowden Hall 102 Monday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Appointments are not needed, walkins are welcome. Prior to the start of an academic year, authorized locations are often added on campus for your convenience. Offices are open Monday through Friday (excluding holidays).
