Chapter Councils
You can join one of many fraternity/sorority chapters, which are organized into councils. We welcome you to explore the groups and find one that’s right for you.
Interfraternity Council (IFC)
The Interfraternity Council (IFC) of men's fraternities believes in developing leadership for a better future, serving the community, connecting through brotherhood and committing to scholarship.
Multicultural Greek Council (MGC)
The Multicultural Greek Council is all about culture, community, collaboration and teamwork. MGC Fraternities and MGC Sororities come together under the MGC umbrella to support students through programs that enhance campus and build the fraternity and sorority community.
National Pan-Hellenic Council (NPHC)
Known as the "Divine Nine," the founding of these historically African-American National Pan-Hellenic Council (NPHC) organizations predates the Civil Rights Movement. Membership in NPHC Fraternities and NPHC Sororities is a lifetime commitment to community awareness and action through educational, economic and cultural service.
Panhellenic Council (PHC)
The largest international association solely dedicated to women's sororities, the Panhellenic Council enriches the journeys of collegiate women. Chapters promote sisterhood and service to the community.
Recognized and Unrecognized Groups
Some fraternities and sororities are recognized by NIU and some are not. Recognized organizations receive benefits from their relationship with the university, including:
- Guidance and support from NIU.
- Ability to hold events on campus and use NIU facilities/equipment.
A group becomes unrecognized when NIU ends their relationship with them due to health or safety concerns. Unrecognized groups:
- Don’t receive guidance or support from NIU.
- Can’t participate in NIU events or use university property.
Some unrecognized groups choose to continue to operate. The following groups are unrecognized by NIU:
- Omega Delta Fraternity (OD)
- Pi Kappa Alpha Fraternity (Pike)
- Sigma Alpha Mu Fraternity (SAM or Sammies)
NIU discourages you from joining an unrecognized organization.
