Center for Greek Life

NIU is dedicated to supporting our fraternities and sororities. By constructing a new Center for Greek Life (PDF), we’ll be able to amplify that support for generations to come. Currently in the planning stage, the approximately 17,000-square-foot building will be constructed near the intersection of West Hillcrest Drive and Blackhawk Road.

The center will promote a sense of unity among Greek students and provide them with event/meeting space, as well as leadership and professional development opportunities. It will also enhance engagement with the community and local groups/organizations.

Features

The center will be a hub of activity for Greek students, a gathering place for Greek alumni, and a center for campus and community outreach. It will also be home to administrative space for the Office of Fraternity and Sorority Life, facilitating communication between our staff members and students.

Planned features include:

  • Meeting spaces and conference rooms for council/chapter events, leadership workshops, community engagement and more
  • Study and lounge space where students can focus, collaborate and socialize
  • Large event space that converts into smaller spaces, accommodating multiple events at the same time
  • Outdoor, year-round courtyard for a variety of activities
  • Warming kitchen to facilitate catering services for events
  • Food services offering healthy snack options

Community Development and Support

The center will be located in DeKalb’s Annie Glidden North neighborhood, where the city has invested more than $5.5 million on improvements since 2017, guided by a revitalization plan. By enhancing community outreach, supporting student success and promoting further activity and investment in the area, the center will play a key role in its ongoing redevelopment.
