The Institute for the Study of Environment, Sustainability and Energy (ESE) exists to foster research, education and community engagement about the environment and sustainability.
We offer two undergraduate degrees in environmental studies: a Bachelor of Science (B.S.) degree and a Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) degree. Your learning experiences will be truly transdisciplinary, bridging perspectives in the natural sciences, social sciences, policy sciences, humanities, technology, and engineering. These programs feature classes and research led by NIU faculty from several different colleges.
To further customize your course of study, you can draw from your personal, intellectual and professional interests to choose from the following six areas of emphasis:
- Biodiversity and Environmental Restoration
- Energy Studies (2023-2024 Sustainability and Energy Studies)
- Environmental Policy (2023-2024 Environmental Policy and Law)
- Nature in Society (2023-2024 Environmental Justice)
- Sustainable Food Systems
- Water Sciences (2023-2024 moves to earth, atmosphere, and environment)
We also offer a minor in environmental studies, certificate of undergraduate study in sustainable food systems, and a teacher certification program in environmental science.
The Environmental Studies program will connect your passion for sustainability to NIU and surrounding communities through a variety of partnerships, volunteer activities, and networking opportunities. Similarly, we recognize that some of the best learning occurs outside the classroom - students are encouraged to participate in hands-on learning through for-credit internships, faculty-led research opportunities and getting involved in NIU’s Communiversity Gardens.
