Move-In Day Timeline
Know your move-in date
Friday, August 24
8:30 a.m. - 2:30 p.m.
Arriving early?Log in to see your move-in date.
Checking In (Required) · Whether you're arriving on August 24 or earlier, check in online up to 24 hours before your move-in date so we know you're coming!
Between 8:30 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. on Friday, August 24, Team NIU volunteers will be standing by to help you move things into your room. You can still move in after these hours or during the weekend, but you'll have to move in on your own.
If you want to get here before Friday, August 24, you can sign up for early arrival.
Northern View Community residents can move in starting on or after Friday, August 17.
Pack your things and contact your roommate
- Look at your room's measurements to see how much space you have under your bed, in your closet, and in your drawers.
- Read the What to Bring list. Don't forget bed sheets!
- If you're moving into a new room, you can request a bed loft.
- Contact your roommate to get to know each other, discuss the basics, plan for what to bring, and set the tone for a great new academic year.
- Remember to bring your OneCard or another state-issued photo ID on move-in day. Learn about getting a OneCard ID.
Check in before you arrive
Up to 24 hours before you move in, check in using your phone or a computer at go.niu.edu/checkin. Have your receipt ready on your phone when you arrive and pick up your key.
Drive to campus on move-in day
When you get close to campus, put your hang tag on your rear view mirror. Be sure to write your phone number on the front in case we need to contact you about your car. Follow the signs and direction from NIU police to get to your hall.Ongoing I-88 construction may impact your arrival time. If you are arriving from I-88, take the Annie Glidden Road exit and follow the maps below to your hall. The Annie Glidden Road exit is open.
Starting the Monday after move-in, you'll need to purchase a student permit to park your car on campus.

Get your key and move your things to your room
After you park, follow the signs to get your room key.
During fall move-in, you, any of your family members and Team NIU (wearing red shirts) can all help bring your things up to your room.At your door, hold your OneCard flat against the number pad. After it beeps, enter the OneCard PIN that we give you at check-in. When you hear it unlock, push the door open. The key we'll give you at check-in you will open your closet and also your mailbox on the main floor.In the elevator, hold your OneCard flat against the card reader and then press your floor number. That afternoon, you'll have your first of several floor meetings to get to know your new community and meet your residence hall's complex coordinator. We'll have a separate orientation for parents at that time as well. After the meeting, you're invited to the Huskie Fall Kick Off at Huskie Stadium, where you'll get to learn about what it means to be an NIU Huskie fan, explore different NIU traditions, and head to the field for a giant "NIU" class photo!
Getting to know NIU
- Where to Eat: You can use your unlimited meal plan at residential dining locations on campus. You'll also have 10 Flex Dollars that you can use at locations accepting flex dollars.
- Enrolled in Classes: If you aren't already, make sure you are enrolled in classes by Sunday evening of the first week of classes. Otherwise, you will have to move out of your room. We'll remind you about this during move-in if you're not enrolled.
- Connect to NIU Wireless: Get your PC, Mac, or phone connected to the internet.

Your room already comes furnished with things like a bed, dresser, and desk (see Things We Provide below), but here are some things you might want to bring on move-in day.

Things to Leave at Home
- Some kinds of electrical appliances

Typically acceptable appliances (UL approved) include computers, televisions, DVD players, game consoles, stereos, razors and fans. Some hair dryers or curling irons may require additional power and need to be used in public area bathrooms rather than individual resident rooms to avoid tripping circuit breakers.
Use surge protectors/power strips for all appliances, particularly computers, televisions, stereo equipment and game consoles. Lightweight extension cords and multiple outlet plugs without surge protectors create a safety hazard and are prohibited.
Electrical appliances with an enclosed heating element are permitted in the halls (e.g. popcorn makers, coffee pots) if used under continual supervision by the user. Open-ended heating elements and electrical appliances that may pose a fire hazard such as hot plates, hot pots, electric or contact grills, and space heaters, are prohibited.
