Our Faculty and Staff Are Here For You.
As a Huskie, remember that relationships are resources. Get to know faculty and support staff on campus. Build lasting relationships with your professors and our staff members and seek our their help when you need guidance and support. We're here for you and want you succeed in your classes and in life.
We asked faculty and staff members what advice they would give to students and here's what they had to say:
"Talk to your professors. Go to office hours and ask questions. Those conversations can help you find out what other students do to be successful. Building a relationship with your professor will make it easier to get help when you are struggling in a class."
"Reach out for help. This includes fellow students, faculty, staff and student support services. I've personally gotten help from the Writing Center (as have many other faculty). Ask questions. I see that as a sign of intelligence and curiosity. Faculty are constantly seeking help from their peers at NIU and other institutions."
"Take your time to decide what you want to do. It’s okay if you don’t know right away. Talk to professors, attend clubs and organizations. Try as many things as you can so you don’t wonder if you missed out on something you might like. If you’re curious about something, explore it! My father impressed this upon me while I was growing up, and now I’m imparting it on my students."
"The tagline that resonates with me at NIU is: Huskies. Never. Quit. This is such an important motto that I would also translate into advice to students currently attending NIU. Meet your challenges head on and don’t quit. Don’t give up. Keep going and know that you can do it."
"Ask questions! Meet with your advisor every semester, the earlier the better. Check your email. Go to class but also go to office hours. Class is important — it's what you're paying for and where you'll learn and share ideas with your peers. Office hours are where you can ask questions, get further insight and make some great connections. I learned some really valuable things going to office hours, not only for the class but for life in general."
"The biggest takeaway is for students to be creative thinkers and socially conscious global citizens. These are qualities that will prepare them for the world, and enable them to be relevant and prepared for any job given the fluid nature of work and career paths. There are a lot of opportunities to learn and grow at NIU. Students need to be involved and explore. Professors are always a good start, especially when you are taking their classes."
"Get involved and use the resources NIU has to offer. From student organizations to intramural teams to fraternity and sorority life, join an organization where you can make friendships that could last a lifetime. Use the writing center and the library, Career Services and counseling services. So many resources at a student’s disposal!"
"Enjoy your college experience. Make sure to keep up with your coursework but remember there is a necessary balance between academics and enjoyment. Find events on campus and attend things you are interested in that sound fun. It’s also a great way to meet new people and make a good social life."
"Take advantage of all there is on offer — activities, programs, events, classes, resources and help. Learning doesn't just happen in a classroom, and the experiences that will have the greatest impact on us are often not what we'd expect. Go hear a musical performance, attend a presentation not associated with your major or check out a title from a library book display on a topic you know nothing about. And, when you need help of any kind, don't be afraid to ask for it."
