What did you want to be when you were growing up? Are you pursuing that as a major, or have you taken another path?
Growing up, I wanted to be a professional basketball player. After tearing my ACL and meniscus, I decided I wanted to pursue a major in kinesiology, in hopes of being an orthopedic doctor who specializes in ACL and meniscus repair.
What is your major (and/or minor) and why did you decide on this course of study?
My major is kinesiology. I chose this field because after tearing my ACL and meniscus, I experienced firsthand how challenging the recovery process can be. That experience inspired me to pursue a career where I can help others recover from similar injuries and support them in getting back to the activities they love.
What has been something you have found pleasantly surprising about your experience at NIU?
Something that has surprised me about my NIU experience is the wide variety of opportunities available to students. NIU not only provides experiences that help us grow, but also offers strong connections and networks that open doors for the future.
How have you connected with other students to study for classes, meet new people or form new friendships?
I have connected with other people by working in the dining halls, joining student organizations, volunteering and by doing random activities.
Are you involved in any student organizations, mentoring programs or extra-curricular activities? If so, which ones? How have they added to your experience as a Huskie?
I’m involved in a student organization called Umoja. This has helped my experience as a Huskie because it not only helps me connect with people who are similar to me, but also makes me feel a sense of belonging.
What NIU offices, departments or resources have helped you feel safe, supported and successful? And how?
The University Honors Program and the NIU Writing Center have helped me feel supported and successful by providing guidance, resources and a welcoming environment. In addition, the Holmes Student Center has given me a safe and quiet space to study, which helps me stay focused and productive.
What Honors Program opportunities or support have helped you get closer to your academic or career goals so far?
The scholarship support has helped me tremendously. Without their help financially, I wouldn't be able to attend school and pursue my academic and career goals.
What do you enjoy the most about the Honors Program?
What I enjoy most about the honors program is the smaller, more engaging classes that let me connect closely with professors and classmates. I also value the opportunities for leadership, research and community that make the experience both challenging and rewarding.
Who has been one of your favorite instructors/professors and why? What course did they teach?
One of my favorite professors is David Benner, Jr., who taught Principles and Techniques of Resistance Training. He's one of my favorite teachers because he was very genuine and really wanted to make sure students understood what they were doing. In this course, he taught me not only how to work out properly, but also how to set obtainable goals and hit them.
How have you benefited by attending class regularly?
By attending class regularly, I've been able to stay on top of the material, understand concepts more clearly and ask questions when I need help. It also helps me stay engaged and build stronger connections with my professors and classmates.
Where is your favorite spot on campus or in the community? Why are you drawn to it?
My favorite spot on campus is the Holmes Student Center because it provides a quiet environment that helps me stay focused and productive. I naturally associate the space with completing homework, and the background study music creates a comfortable atmosphere. Having Starbucks nearby is also a plus.
What advice would you give to a student who is researching colleges to apply to?
Advice I would give a student researching colleges would be to focus on finding a school that best fits their academic goals and personal needs. It's important to look at available programs, campus resources and financial aid opportunities.
Why is a college education important to you?
A college education is important to me because it's the foundation I need to achieve my goal of becoming an orthopedic ACL doctor. It gives me the knowledge, skills and experiences necessary to succeed in the medical field while also teaching me persistence and discipline to reach that level.
What strategies do you use to manage your time between the responsibilities of school, work, friends and family?
I manage my time by keeping a schedule, setting priorities and breaking big tasks into smaller steps. I make sure school comes first, but I also set aside time for work, friends and family so I don't feel overwhelmed. Staying organized helps me balance everything without losing focus.
How do you stay informed about events and services that are available on campus?
I stay informed about campus events and services through Instagram and my NIU email.
What do you do to relax or recharge?
To relax or recharge, I like to put on my favorite TV show and eat my favorite food.
Please tell us about your job and hobbies.
I work at Stevenson Dining Hall and serve as a student manager for the women's basketball teams. Outside of work and school, I enjoy volunteering in the community and playing basketball, which allows me to stay active and connected to something I love.
