Transfer Family Orientation

While your student may not be new to the college experience, they will be new to NIU. We understand that you may have questions about what's in store for your student, and we want you to feel comfortable supporting them as they start their life as a Huskie.

Online Family Orientation

We invite you to learn about the Huskie experience with family orientation. We encourage all to access our online family orientation, even if you also plan to accompany your student to their on-campus orientation. Our online family orientation is called the Family Support and Resource Guide. This module was designed to help you learn about our campus, the academic and support staff who will play a key role in your student’s success, introduce you to the Huskie experience and help answer questions you or your student may have. The Family Support and Resource Guide is available in English and Spanish.

Attending Orientation with your student

Registered guests of students attending on-campus orientation will stay with their student for the large group sessions. We’ll also have sessions just for you when your attends their orientation advising appointment. During the on-campus family orientation, you will learn about how you can support your student as work toward graduation and how you can stay connected with the university.

Academic advising for your student takes place during their Orientation date. They’ll attend the advising meeting on their own. Students will meet with an academic advisor, who will guide them in registering for classes.
