Welcome to the Huskie Family!

Congratulations on being admitted to NIU as a transfer student!

Choosing the next stop on your college journey is a life-changing decision, and we're confident that NIU is the right school for you.

Next Steps to Becoming a Huskie

We can’t wait to start our journey with you! Follow these initial steps to join our Huskie family.

1. Confirm Your Intent to Enroll

Declare yourself an official Huskie! Many of your next steps, including this one, will require you to use MyNIU.

2. Pay Your Enrollment Fee

After you confirm your intent to enroll, you’ll be prompted to pay your nonrefundable enrollment fee ($85).

  • While you are still logged into the MyNIU Student System, go to the Financial Account tile to make your payment.
  • If you do not pay your enrollment fee immediately, it will be added to your account and you will see the charge on your monthly statement from the Office of the Bursar.
  • You will not be able to register for orientation until the enrollment fee is paid.

3. Review How Your Credits Transfer

An evaluation of your transfer credits will be available one to two weeks after you’ve been admitted. We’ll email you at both your personal and NIU email addresses when it’s ready. You may view the transfer credit report in MyNIU by going to your Student Center.

With counselors specifically designated to work with you, we’re eager to help.

We offer numerous individualized resources, including transfer guides broken down by college and degree paths.

4. Apply for Financial Aid

Fill out the Free Application for Student Aid (FAFSA) if you haven’t already, and make sure you added NIU to your list of colleges that receive your FAFSA information. If you are an Illinois resident but are ineligible for federal aid as an undocumented or transgender student, you can still apply for state assistance through the Alternative Application for Illinois Financial Aid.

We automatically considered you for a merit scholarship when you applied, but be sure to check out MyScholarships to see if you’re eligible for competitive scholarships through your major department or college.

Prepare for Your NIU Experience

Heads up, Huskies! Now that you’re official, we want to make your transfer to NIU an easy one.

Be sure to check your email regularly. This is the official way we communicate with our students, and you won’t want to miss out on important information and announcements. These next will set you up for success.

Register for Orientation

Orientation is required before enrolling in classes at NIU.

Learn About Housing

You’re not required to live in our residence halls as a transfer student, but everything that makes the Huskie life so special can be found living on campus. Lifelong friendships. Opportunity. Fun. Explore NIU’s residence halls and find the one that fits your lifestyle. We even offer on-campus apartments and housing for families and upper-division students

If you plan to live on-campus, submit your housing contract, make your prepayment, choose the hall you’d like to live in and choose your room. The Housing Portal is updated daily. Follow these tips if the residence hall you’d like to live in does not have spaces open for the type of room you prefer.
