Transfer Student Orientation

Coronavirus (COVID-19) Update

Your health and well-being are the top priorities at NIU and Orientation and First Year Programs. In response to COVID-19, we're adapting our on-campus orientations to a non-face-to-face format. If you have any questions about this process, please contact us at

We have recently updated our transfer FAQ webpage in response to these changes.

Our virtual orientation program is required for admitted students, and will help you discover what it means to be a Huskie. You'll connect to student resources like financial aid, learn how to get involved on campus, meet with your academic advisor and register for classes. See our orientation checklist to get started.

What to know about summer orientation

Your virtual orientation experience will involve of a four-part sequence:

  • Pre-Orientation Program (POP): This self-guided online module that will help students understand what to expect as you transfer to NIU and help students become more familiar with the tools and resources you will need to be a successful Huskie.
  • Online orientation sessions: Upon registering for orientation, you will have access to video and chat sessions offering an overview of such topics as financial aid, housing and dining, the CHANCE program and University Honors. You can review at your own pace and participate in live presentations.
  • Advising and registration: As you explore online orientation sessions, you will receive an email from your advisor, who will schedule a virtual appointment on the date you selected in MyNIU. After your advising appointment on your selected date, you will be able to proceed with registering for classes in MyNIU.
  • Huskie to Huskie live chats: In addition to advising on your registered date, you will have the opportunity to join other transfer students in a live chat led by NIU student Orientation Leaders. These Huskie to Huskie meetings will offer insights from a peer perspective on life at NIU and campus resources that will help you find success.

You can sign up for orientation by logging into the MyNIU system. navigating to the Undergraduate Orientation tile on the Student Homepage, selecting your preferred session date and paying a confirmation fee. You will have the option to defer your confirmation fee payment to your first-semester bill, although it will be posted to your student account and available to be paid 24 hours after you register for a date. Advising for some academic programs is not available for all sessions. Dates do fill quickly — so register today! Please note, we do not have a waitlist.

If you've changed your major since you've applied to NIU, please make sure you fill out a change your major form. You'll receive confirmation of this change within 48 hours of submission.

Please note: Depending on your orientation date, you may not be able to register for classes at your orientation program. Be sure to check your enrollment appointment on your MyNIU Student Homepage.
