Sign Up Process

You can register for the METAS program during the summer until early September. After this date, if you wish to join the program and have a mentor, please contact Elbia Del Llano directly at edelllano1@niu.edu.

Mentee Application

Qualifications

  • Must be a current freshman or transfer student
  • Available to meet Mondays from 4-5 p.m. for the academic year
  • Willing to meet with your mentor
  • Awareness and appreciation of diversity and inclusion
  • Commit three to five hours per week to meeting with your mentor and program staff for guidance
  • Must commit to participate in the program for two consecutive semesters (fall and spring) if entering NIU in the fall, or one semester if entering NIU in the spring

Goals and Responsibilities

  • Ask lots of questions and engage with your mentor and the Latino Resource Center staff.
  • Check your email and Teams on a daily basis for communication from the program or your mentor.
  • Respond to contacts from the program staff or your mentors within 48 hours. Communication is the key to success!
  • Be on time for all meetings and events. If a scheduling conflict occurs, you must contact your mentor and/or program in advance to reschedule
  • Attend meetings held Mondays from 4-5 p.m. for the academic year (fall and spring)
  • Maintain weekly contact with your mentor three to five hours per week
  • Aim to maintain at least a 2.0 cumulative GPA; if a mentee falls below a 2.0 cumulative GPA plan, they will be required to meet with LRC staff to develop an academic success growth plan
