Mission and Vision

The Latino Resource Center (LRC) is a cultural and resource center under the Division of Academic Diversity, Equity and Inclusion at NIU. The LRC centers its work on the experiences and success of those who identify as Latina/o/x and their multiple intersecting identities. The LRC promotes an inclusive environment that supports the success of our students, faculty and staff and facilitates a sense of belonging for all at NIU.

We achieve this mission by offering an array of resources and services that support academic and professional development, research and training experiences, and mentoring and leadership programs, using a data-informed, culturally centered approach. The Hispanic and Latina/o/x diasporas and other cultures and traditions are represented throughout the LRC and at many events hosted through the center and NIU student organizations.

The LRC also possesses a strong commitment to the following:

  • Providing a welcoming space for all students irrespective of nationality, language, gender, sexual orientation, citizenship or immigrant status
  • Supporting the development of students’ self-advocacy skills to help them attain their academic and professional aspirations
  • Understanding the value of family involvement in a student’s educational journey and engaging the family unit through outreach initiatives and community collaboration
  • Promoting an agenda that supports Hispanic, Latina/o/x and other student populations’ success by actively participating in nationwide and statewide organizations and seeking ways to collaborate with local entities
  • Developing programs that support the experiences of our students, faculty and staff, and the greater NIU community
