Specialist Degree Programs

A specialist degree sits between a master's and a doctoral degree, offering focused, advanced study in a specific professional field. It typically spans one to two years and is designed for professionals who want deeper expertise in a targeted area without the full commitment of a doctoral program.

NIU offers two specialist degrees with a strong record of graduate success. Our specialist degree in educational administration was the first in Illinois to meet standards set by the Illinois General Assembly, and our graduates go on to lead schools and districts across the state. Our specialist degree in school psychology integrates theoretical foundations with applied research skills, preparing you to work as a competent and creative practitioner.
