Counseling and Consultation Services
We provide comprehensive mental health support for currently enrolled students like you at Northern Illinois University. Our team of trained professionals is committed to improving the mental health of our student body as you work to achieve your academic and personal goals.
COVID-19 (Coronavirus) Response
Counseling and Consultation Services (CCS) remains committed to supporting the mental health needs of NIU students. For the fall semester, we will continue to provide telecounseling support through video or phone appointments. CCS is open for mental health emergencies and students who need private accommodations for telecounseling appointments.
Please call 815-753-1206 to get support for yourself or someone else and CCS staff will help you determine what needs to happen next. We ask that you call first so we can maintain all COVID-19 health and safety guidelines.
CCS will continue to offer the following telecounseling services:
- Initial consultation appointments (Monday-Friday, 12 - 4 p.m.).
- Individual and group therapy.
- Mindfulness drop-in group.
- Consultation services for faculty, staff and others who are concerned about a student.
- Referral services for other mental health and campus resources.
After Hours Support
If you need immediate support after office hours, please call 815-753-1206 and you will be forwarded to speak with an on-call therapist.
If you are experiencing a mental health emergency, are concerned about your immediate safety, or are concerned about the safety of others, please call 911.
The Northwestern Medicine Student Health Center at NIU continues to offer psychiatric services to students. The Student Health Center phone number is 815-306-2777.
Students interested in self-care and stress-management support are encouraged to utilize IntelliCare, a mental health app designed specifically for NIU students by Northwestern University.
