Using MyNIU and the NIU Next Steps Portal as an Admitted Student

There are two important systems that you will access as an admitted student to take your next steps to enroll at NIU. Learn more about each below.

MyNIU Student System

MyNIU is the hub where you will access the MyNIU Student System, our student information system. You will use it your entire career at NIU. 

Accessing MyNIU

After submitting your application to NIU, you received an email from admissions@niu.edu with you NIU AccountID and the important steps you must take to activate it.

To login to the MyNIU Student System, you’ll use your NIU AccountID (Z-ID). You can go directly to https://sa.niu.edu or find the link to MyNIU at the top of the NIU homepage under the “Quick Links" menu, and then choose “MyNIU Student System.” 

What Can I Do in the MyNIU Student System?  

You will use the MyNIU Student System from the time you are admitted all the way to graduation. Once you apply to NIU, you will use it to:

NIU Next Steps Portal

You’ll only use the NIU Next Steps portal from the time you submit your application until you begin your first semester at NIU.

Accessing the NIU Next Steps Portal

Log in to the Next Steps portal using the personal email address that you used to complete your application to NIU. If you do not remember or if you do not know your password, choose “Forgot Your Password” and enter the email address you used to apply to NIU and your date of birth. The system will send a temporary PIN to that email address which you can then use to set a new password and access the Next Steps portal. Your NIU Next Steps portal email address and password are different from the ones you use to access MyNIU.

What Can I Do in the NIU Next Steps Portal?

You will use the NIU Next Steps portal to see your personalized next steps to take as an admitted student, including:  

  • Register for Orientation.
  • Sign up for placement testing.
  • Sign up for housing.
  • View information about events exclusively for admitted students.
How to Find Your AccountID (Z-ID) and Password

Information about your newly created Z-ID and password was sent to the personal email account you used when you applied to NIU. 

If you don’t know your Z-ID, you can use the Find My Account ID tool on the NIU website.

  • Enter the email address you used to apply for admissions to NIU.
  • If the email entered can be matched to a MyNIU account, a message will be sent to your alternate (non-NIU) email address with your Z-ID as well as the initial password configuration needed to reset your password and securely register your NIU account.
  • You will need to activate the unique NIU Account ID (Z-ID) that has been created for you by going to the NIU AccountIDs and Passwords Account Activation page.
How to Confirm Your Intent to Enroll and Pay your Enrollment Fee

Once you are logged in to the MyNIU Student System:  

  1. Click the Admissions tile.
  2. Click the “Confirm Intent to Enroll” button.
  3. Click on the Financial Account tile.
  4. Click on “Make a Payment,” and follow the instructions to pay via credit card or electronic check. The enrollment fee is $155 for new students and $85 for transfer students.

If you do not pay your enrollment fee immediately, it will be added to your account and you will see the charge on your monthly statement from the Office of the Bursar.

You will not be able to register for orientation until the enrollment fee is paid.

How to Register for Orientation

Orientation is required before enrolling in classes at NIU. We’ll email your invitation to sign up for Orientation within 24 hours after you’ve confirmed your intent to enroll and paid your enrollment fee.

You can also access Orientation registration through the NIU Next Steps portal. Choose the “Register for Orientation Today!” button. (You will not have access to that button until you have paid your enrollment fee.) Then select the type of orientation program you would like to attend and chose your orientation date. 

Log in to the NIU Next Steps portal using the personal email address that you used to complete your application to NIU. The system will send a temporary PIN to that email address which you can then use to set a new password and access the portal.

Space is limited and sessions fill up quickly, so register as soon as possible. Advising for some majors and academic colleges is not available at all orientation dates.

If you’ve changed your major since you applied to NIU, please make sure you fill out the form to change your major prior to registering.

How to Check Your NIU Email

Your NIU student email address contains the NIU account ID (Z-ID) that you were assigned after you submitted your application, followed by @students.niu.edu. Information about your newly created Z-ID was sent to the personal email account you used when you applied to NIU. If you haven’t yet, you’ll need to activate your NIU account ID.

Your email can be accessed through MyNIU.niu.edu or Microsoft Office 365

You can download the Microsoft Outlook app on your phone so you'll be notified when you receive emails from your NIU account.

We use multifactor authentication (MFA) to keep your email secure. You'll use both your password and a code texted to your cell phone to log in. Download the Microsoft Authenticator app for free. Be prepared to provide a phone number as a means of authentication prior to login.

Aside from Outlook, your free access to Microsoft Office 365 provides access to applications such as Word, Excel, PowerPoint and more.
