Our truth-in-tuition policy locks your tuition rate for four continuous academic years, beginning with your first fall or spring semester at NIU. It applies to Illinois residents enrolling at NIU for the first time as degree-seeking undergraduates, and it does not matter how many credit hours you transfer in. Your rate is set when you start here.

Transfer Merit Scholarships
You are considered as soon as your application and supporting documents are complete. There is no separate application. Awards are based on your cumulative transfer GPA and are renewable for two years: $2,000 a year at a 3.50 GPA and above, $1,500 at 3.25 to 3.49 and $1,000 at 3.00 to 3.24.

Dates to Know
- File your FAFSA as early as possible. Feb. 1 is our priority deadline for scholarship and grant consideration for summer and fall.
- Nov. 15 to Jan. 31 is our MyScholarships application window for most competitive awards.
Meeting the direct admission criteria does not by itself qualify you for a scholarship. Awards are based on your cumulative transfer GPA and other criteria, so submitting your materials early gives you the best chance at funding.

Complete Your NIU Application and Send Official Transcripts
Log in to your NIU application and be sure to submit for an official admissions decision. Request an official transcript from every college you have attended.

Confirm Your Intent to Enroll
Once you are officially admitted, we will send you directions to accept your admission.

Review Your Transfer Credit Evaluation
We email you a course-by-course evaluation showing how your credit applies at NIU. You can view it anytime in MyNIU.
Timing: two to four weeks after your official admission offer is made.
Apply for Aid and Scholarships
File your FAFSA as soon as it opens. Filing early also keeps you eligible for need-based grants.
Timing: by Feb. 1 for summer and fall.

Frequently Asked Questions
Often, yes. It depends on your major and on how your completed coursework maps to NIU requirements. Students who complete an associate degree in a field aligned with their NIU major are frequently on track for two more years of full-time study. Your transfer credit evaluation and your academic advisor will give you an exact answer.
Direct admission admits you to the university. Some majors have additional requirements such as a separate application, a portfolio or audition, prerequisite coursework or a higher GPA. Tell us your intended major when you act on your offer and we will explain exactly what it takes.
Yes. The major you list when you act on your offer is not binding. Talk with your academic advisor before you change it so you understand how the switch affects your remaining requirements and your time to graduation.
Send us an updated official transcript after your final term. We reevaluate your credit and update your evaluation in MyNIU. Additional coursework can only help, and it may shorten your remaining requirements.
Your direct admission offer assumes you maintain the cumulative GPA that made you eligible. If your final official transcript shows a GPA below that threshold, we review your record individually and contact you about your options. A change in GPA does not automatically close the door.
Acting on your offer means completing and submitting our application so we can make an official admission decision. Confirming your intent to enroll comes later, after you are admitted, and tells us you are accepting our offer. Neither one locks you in. You can change your plans at any point, and we ask that you contact our Transfer Center if you do.
Yes. NIU admits transfer students for fall, spring and summer terms. You will need to submit a new application for the semester you plan to start.
