Why did you choose to attend NIU?
I chose to attend NIU because it felt like the right place for me to grow as a musician. The NIU Steelband, led by Professor Liam Teague, reminded me of home, and my mentor, Dr. Zarah Lake, an NIU alum, encouraged me to come. NIU offered support and lots of opportunities.

What did you want to be when you were growing up? Are you pursuing that as a major, or have you taken another path?
Growing up, I always wanted to be a musician, especially because music was such a big part of my life. I’m still pursuing that path now by majoring in music and continuing to grow as a performer.

What is your major (and/or minor) and why did you decide on this course of study?
My major is music with emphases in performance and music education. I chose this course of study because music has always been a major part of my life, and I knew early on that I wanted to build my future around it. My dad, who is also a musician, inspired me to follow this path, and over time I discovered that I also enjoy teaching and helping others grow. Studying both performance and education at NIU allows me to develop as a musician while preparing to share that passion with future students.

What has been something you have found pleasantly surprising about your experience at NIU?
Something that has pleasantly surprised me about my experience at NIU is how supportive and welcoming the music community is. I didn’t expect to find such a strong sense of connection so quickly, both with other students and the faculty. The environment makes it easier to grow, ask questions and feel comfortable pushing myself as a musician and a student.

How have you connected with other students to study for classes, meet new people or form new friendships?
I’ve connected with other students by getting involved in music spaces, rehearsals and different campus activities. Through those experiences, I met people from other Caribbean islands, and we all became great friends. We study together, support each other and create a sense of home away from home. These connections have made my time at NIU feel welcoming and fun.

Are you involved in any student organizations, mentoring programs or extra-curricular activities? If so, which ones? How have they added to your experience as a Huskie?
As part of being in the steelband, I’ve had the opportunity to travel with the band to different events, which has been an incredible experience. I’ve also been involved in extra music activities outside of school, like community performances and festivals. These experiences have helped me grow as a musician, build strong connections and feel even more a part of the Huskie community.

What NIU offices, departments or resources have helped you feel safe, supported and successful? And how?
The School of Music has been a key resource in helping me feel supported and successful. The professors and staff are approachable and encouraging, creating a welcoming environment where I can grow as a musician. Additionally, the campus support services, like academic advising and counseling, have been helpful in keeping me on track and balanced.

Who has been one of your favorite instructors/professors and why? What course did they teach?
One of my favorite instructors at NIU is Dr. Christine D’Alexander. She taught me both String Techniques and Introduction to Education. I appreciate her because she is knowledgeable, supportive and truly passionate about teaching. Her energy always makes me feel good, and her guidance has helped me improve my skills and gain confidence both as a musician and future educator.

How have you benefited by attending class regularly?
I have benefited greatly by attending class regularly because it helps me stay focused and keep up with the material, which is especially important in music where practice and feedback matter a lot.

Where is your favorite spot on campus or in the community? Why are you drawn to it?
My favorite spot on campus is the lagoon and water fountain by the science building. I’m drawn to it because it’s peaceful and calming. It’s a great place to take a break, clear my mind and recharge between classes.

What advice would you give to a student who is researching colleges to apply to?
My advice would be to really take time to visit campuses, talk to current students and explore the programs that interest you. Don’t just focus on rankings or size, think about where you’ll feel supported, challenged and at home. Finding a school with a strong community and opportunities that match your goals is what matters most.

Why is a college education important to you?
A college education is important to me because it opens doors to opportunities I might not have otherwise. It helps me gain the skills, knowledge and confidence I need to succeed in my career and make a positive impact through music and education.

What strategies do you use to manage your time between the responsibilities of school, work, friends and family?
To manage my time between school, work, friends and family, I prioritize creating a schedule that balances all my responsibilities. I use a planner to keep track of deadlines and commitments, which helps me stay organized and avoid last-minute stress. I also set aside time to spend with my friends to get a break from studying and working.

How do you stay informed about events and services that are available on campus?
I stay informed about events and services on campus mostly through social media. Following official NIU social media accounts and student groups helps me keep up with what’s happening and any opportunities available.

What do you do to relax or recharge?
To relax and recharge, I like to take walks, spend time with friends and call my family back home. Sometimes I also go out and enjoy a change of scenery. These activities help me clear my mind and recharge for whatever comes next.

Please tell us about your job and hobbies.
I work at Stevenson Dining, where I get to interact with people and develop my teamwork skills. In my free time, I enjoy playing music, spending time with friends and exploring new places. These hobbies help me stay balanced and motivated.
