First-year Family Orientation

Online family orientation is an opportunity for you to learn about the academic and support staff who will play a key role in your student’s success.

What to know about family orientation:

  • You are invited to complete an online family orientation module, which will help familiarize you with key academic and support services, along with the people at NIU who will set your student up for success.
  • Additionally, the Pre-orientation Program has an optional module — the Family Support and Resource Guide — to introduce you to the Huskie experience and help answer questions you or your student may have.
  • Virtual orientation sessions are available for you to view along with your student, with topics including financial aid and scholarships, housing and dining, campus life and academic resources, as well as special programs like Honors, CHANCE and NIU Athletics.
  • Your student will attend the virtual academic advising portion on their own, where they will meet with their advisor and register for classes.

The online family orientation module will introduce you to key academic and support services available to your student. You’ll hear from faculty, staff and current students who will share information and advice with you about student success at NIU. This online module will help you prepare you for the transition of your student attending NIU.

Family orientation is designed for parents and other adult family members. Information presented may not be appropriate for younger siblings or children.
