Introduction to Faculty Promotion and Tenure Packet Templates

Interfolio streamlines the faculty promotion and tenure review process by organizing materials into structured cases and packets. A case in Interfolio represents an individual faculty member’s review process, while a packet consists of the specific documents and materials required at each stage of review.

To assist faculty in preparing their submissions, we have configured several packet templates tailored to different types of promotion and tenure review. These templates ensure consistency, align with institutional guidelines, and help faculty present their accomplishments effectively. Below, you’ll find an introduction to each of the packet templates where you can learn more about the corresponding packet template that will apply to your tenure and/or promotion case.

Packet Template Types

When it is time for you to begin preparing your promotion and/or tenure packet, your college Interfolio coordinator will create your promotion and/or tenure case in the Interfolio system that will include your packet template. Depending on your classification and current faculty status, your packet will follow one of the following templates and will include the provided prompts as shown.

Clinical faculty applying for promotion will use an online packet template in their case that includes the following form and file upload fields along with these provided instruction prompts.


Application for Promotion and/or Tenure

Your application is submitted in an online form at the beginning of your packet as further described.

Application Form required

To submit your application, draft the following information and then copy/paste into the provided form in this section of your packet:

  • Applicant Name
  • Current Rank
  • Department/School/Division
  • Educational Background (Include name of institution and location, dates attended, and degree earned.)
  • Professional Experience (List institutions, rank or title, and dates of appointment concerning all professional positions in chronological order showing the most recent first. Include name of institution, rank/title, and appointment dates.)
  • Memorandum of Understanding (State whether this position is covered by an MOU that modifies promotion/tenure criteria or procedures.)

Clinical Responsibilities

Attach a 1-2 page self-evaluation of your clinical responsibilities that summarizes the ways in which you believe they have met or exceeded the expectations set forth in university, college and unit criteria. Clinical faculty are subject to the guidelines for clinical responsibilities described below, rather than the guidelines for scholarly activity that apply to tenured/tenure-track faculty.

Individuals being recommended for promotion within clinical faculty appointments must have demonstrated successful provision of services to patients or clients and/or provided successful leadership and coordination of clinical services. Further, individuals being recommended for promotion must have shown continuing concern for critical assessment and improvement of their clinical services.

(A) Promotion to rank of assistant clinical professor: Promise, as demonstrated by an earned doctorate or similar educational or professional accomplishment, of an ability for engagement in the provision of clinical or client service.

(B) Promotion to rank of associate clinical professor: In considering individuals for promotion to associate professor, particular care should be given to assessing effectiveness of clinical care or client services.

(C) Promotion to rank of clinical professor: Individuals being recommended for promotion to the rank of professor should demonstrate a continued record of exemplary clinical or client services.

Attach a 1-2 page self-evaluation of your research, artistry and scholarship contributions that summarizes the ways in which you believe they have met or exceeded the expectations set forth in university, college and unit criteria. These include:

  • Success in keeping up to date in the field(s) of scholarly competence.
  • Quality of scholarly or creative productivity in the faculty member's chosen field(s) of study that may include work which spans at least two traditional disciplines.
  • Contributions to the creation, integration, and dissemination of knowledge. Notably, research impact should be measured not only based on quality of publication outlets, citations, and other common research metrics, but also based on impact on practices and reach of intended audience.
