First-generation College Students

We understand the first-gen experience.

More than half our undergraduates are among the first generation in their family to attend a four-year college. So, we know what it’s like to be a first-gen student. It takes courage and determination. It can be challenging and life-changing, for you and those you care about.

We’ll help you build the life you want, on campus and after graduation. Our programs and services will help you adjust to NIU and connect with other students, faculty and staff who will support and guide you.

We’re Committed to Your Success

NIU has been named a member of the FirstGen Forward Network. Learn more about how we’re working to support you as a first-generation student.

First-generation Huskie Spotlights

Cindy Carbajal

Being a first-generation, Mexican American woman, I have always known I wanted to pursue higher education. My parents, who both only have a middle-school education, came to this country not knowing the language or the culture and made a life for themselves and their children. Every day I am thankful and feel immense pride that I am their daughter. Due to their sacrifices and endless support, I have the privilege and opportunity to be attending college. While I am the one attending university, my future degree will also be theirs in a way. For myself and for them, I will continue my education and make sure I do my best to succeed in all my endeavors.

A college education is vital to me because it’s a gateway to opportunities and personal growth. It's not just about earning a degree; it’s about exploring interests, honing skills and building a foundation for a fulfilling career. College provides a structured environment where I can challenge my perspectives, learn from diverse viewpoints, and cultivate critical thinking and problem-solving skills.

Being the first person in my family to attend college, I was not aware of the amount of independence college students gain. I am no longer running on a standardized class schedule or waiting on my mom to pick me up from school. It is up to me to seek the assistance I need and organize a schedule I can keep up with. This independence is doubtlessly preparing me for ‘the real world.’
