Joe Sener, founder, JPS Consulting, LLC
Joe Sener's distinguished career began in 1978 after his U.S. Army service, working on critical components for nuclear power plants and missile-proof structures. By 1986, he earned a Professional Engineer license despite not yet having an undergraduate degree. His expertise in hydraulic systems and leadership roles at companies, such as Baxter Healthcare and Hospira, significantly impacted medical device safety and standards. With a robust educational background and notable contributions to Northern Illinois University and various community and professional organizations, Joe's career is marked by excellence and dedication, making him a deserving candidate for an honorary doctorate from NIU.
Joe began his professional career in 1978 after serving three years of active duty in the U.S. Army. His initial role was in the nuclear power plant design field, where he worked for two companies designing critical components such as steam safety relief valves, containment personnel airlocks, equipment hatches, spent fuel pool gates, and specialty doors. These products are now integral to many nuclear power plants across America and Asia. Joe's reputation for collaborating effectively with Army Corps of Engineer contractors on unique missile-proof and blast-proof structures is a result of his expertise and innovative approaches.
In 1986, despite not having completed his undergraduate degree, Joe's proficiency and dedication earned him a Professional Engineer license. As the construction of nuclear power plants declined in the mid-80s, Joe transitioned to working with hydraulic and pneumatic systems and power cylinders. He designed specialized cylinders for nuclear main steam line isolation and numerous applications for the Nimitz Class aircraft carriers, including steering gear cylinders. His collaboration as Chair of the Technical Committee with the National Fluid Power Association and its work with the Bureau of Navy Ships was instrumental in setting industry standards and dramatically reducing procurement cost for the Department of the Navy.
Joe served as Chief Engineer/Director of Engineering for two manufacturing organizations before completing his undergraduate degree in engineering from Northern Illinois University in 1993. He then ventured into consulting, joining Arthur Andersen in their Business Consulting Division in 1995, where he became a Partner and consulting leader in the Cincinnati Office by 1999.
In 2001, Joe joined Baxter Healthcare as Senior Vice President of Quality Systems and Business Excellence. At Baxter, he specialized in deploying Quality Management Systems in R&D centers worldwide, including Round Lake, Singapore, Vienna, and Brussels. He also played a crucial role in resolving a corporate consent decree with the U.S. FDA and the Department of Justice.
Joe's career further flourished as he worked with Hospira, Pfizer, and ICU Medical, where he became renowned for resolving significant design process and cybersecurity problems in medical devices. His efforts allowed Hospira/ICU Medical to return their intra-venous infusion pump to the marketplace after significant redesigns, and today they affect 137,000 lifesaving patient infusion therapies per day! In 2019, Joe retired from industry and founded JPS Consulting, LLC, where he continues to lend his expertise to various organizations.
Joe's professional affiliations are numerous and distinguished. He served as an Adjunct Faculty in Systems Engineering at Northern Illinois University from 2014 to 2018 and was a founding Lead Examiner and Chief Judge for the State of Illinois’ Lincoln Foundation for Performance Excellence from 1998 to 2009. His memberships include the United States Order of the Engineer, Institute of Industrial & Systems Engineers, American Society for Quality, National Society of Professional Engineers, and the Project Management Institute. Additionally, Joe represented ICU Medical on various industry and governmental working groups for infusion pumps and cybersecurity.
Joe's educational credentials are equally impressive. He holds a Master of Science in Industrial and Systems Engineering from Northern Illinois University (2010) and a Bachelor of Science in Engineering/Industrial Technology from the same institution (1993). He received the Outstanding Alumni Award from NIU College of Engineering in 2007 and holds several professional certifications, including Licensed Professional Engineer (Wisconsin), Certified Project Management Professional (PMP), ASQ Certified Six Sigma Black Belt, Certified Quality Engineer, and Certified Quality Auditor.
Beyond his professional and educational achievements, Joe has made significant contributions to volunteerism and philanthropy. His service to industry, youth, and community is unparalleled. He has been a lifelong Scout leader serving on the Chicago Area Council board, a volunteer pilot for the Experimental Aviation Association Young Eagles program, and a black belt instructor in Okinawan martial arts. Joe has also served on various community commissions and as an election judge for Jo Daviess County, Illinois.
Joe's commitment to Northern Illinois University is noteworthy. He has been an active member of the NIU Alumni Association Board of Directors since 2014, serving in various leadership roles including as its president. He was instrumental in securing significant contributions from Baxter Healthcare for the construction of the Baxter Reliability Laboratory. Joe's lifetime giving to NIU, estimated at over $1,065,000, reflects his dedication to the university's mission and future.
He has also been instrumental in guiding and mentoring the Dean of CEET as a leader of CEET’s Industry Advisory Board (IAB). He leads discussions, recruits members, and provides direct and highly beneficial input to enhance student outcomes and general success of the college.

Dr. Holly Jones, Presidential Research, Artistry, and Scholarship Professor in Biology and the Institute for the Study of the Environment, Sustainability, and Energy
Dr. Holly Jones is a Presidential Research, Artistry, and Scholarship Professor in Biology and the Institute for the Study of the Environment, Sustainability, and Energy at Northern Illinois University. She is a National Geographic Explorer and Lead Editor of Ecological Solutions and Evidence. Her Bachelor's degree came from UC Santa Cruz and her graduate degrees are from Yale School of the Environment. She is a conservation/restoration ecologist and she uses interdisciplinary, cross-scale methods to answer applied biological research questions both domestically and internationally.
Dr. Jones runs a student-centered lab; she trains students to foster curiosity about how ecosystems work and their underlying ecology and to pursue ecological research that enhances environmental stewardship. Dr. Jones’ Evidence-based Restoration Lab focuses on addressing the biodiversity crisis. She and her graduate students study the causes and consequences of ecosystem degradation and species endangerment and pursues research that seeks to understand how to prioritize restoration and conservation efforts, identify innovative restoration/conservation strategies, and highlight solutions to declining biodiversity. Dr. Jones and her students work with non-profit organizations, governmental organizations, land managers, and the public to ensure their research has on-the-ground applications. Dr. Jones has mentored over 20 graduate students and over 50 undergraduates since starting at NIU and has won numerous mentoring awards including the MAC Faculty Award for Student Success, NIU Exemplary Faculty Mentoring Award, and NIU Presidential Committee for the Status of Women Outstanding Mentoring Award.
