Student Resources

At NIU, you'll find support both inside and outside the classroom. Whether you need academic assistance, opportunities to get involved, financial support or career guidance, you'll have access to resources that help you succeed throughout your time on campus.

We encourage you to use support resources early, stay engaged in your classes and build connections with faculty, staff and fellow students.

Academic Support

Mathematics and statistics courses require consistent practice and engagement. We offer several resources to help you strengthen your skills and stay on track throughout the semester.

Tips for success: Start early, attend class regularly, plan study time outside class and form study groups with classmates.

Faculty and Course Support

Your instructor is your first point of contact for questions about coursework, assignments and study strategies.

Office hours are listed on faculty profile pages and office doors. Contact the math office at 815-753-0566 for assistance locating office hours.

Many 100- and 200-level courses include teaching assistants who provide additional support. Textbooks, publisher materials and instructor-provided practice sets are other helpful resources.

Course Placement

Students are placed into mathematics courses based on prior academic experience. If you haven't completed postsecondary mathematics coursework, you'll need to complete the placement exam.

Student Life and Involvement

Building connections outside the classroom can help you feel more engaged and supported during your time at NIU.

  • Join student organizations related to mathematics, statistics and actuarial science.
  • Attend campus events and department activities.
  • Connect with classmates, faculty and alumni through networking opportunities.

Scholarships and Career Resources

We offer resources to help you prepare for internships, careers and opportunities after graduation.
