The School of Mathematical and Statistical Sciences at Northern Illinois University is dedicated to inspiring curiosity, supporting K–12 and undergraduate mathematical enrichment and engaging the broader Illinois educational community.
Through annual competitions and campus-wide events, we give students the chance to experience mathematics in action, connect with faculty and peers and explore where a future in mathematics could take them.
ICTM Regional High School Mathematics Contest
One of our signature outreach events, the ICTM Regional High School Mathematics Contest brings outstanding high school students to NIU for a day of mathematical challenge, collaboration and discovery.
Each year, the contest showcases the strength of mathematical talent across northern Illinois and gives students a firsthand look at college-level mathematics and campus life.
- 200–400 students participate annually.
- 12–17 high schools represented across the region.
- Individual and team events spanning algebra, geometry and pre-calculus.
Next contest: Saturday, Feb. 20, 2027
Putnam Competition
NIU proudly serves as a local site for the William Lowell Putnam Mathematical Competition, the most prestigious undergraduate mathematics competition in North America.
This demanding national exam challenges students to solve 12 proof-based problems across two timed sessions, offering a chance to engage deeply with advanced problem-solving alongside students from hundreds of colleges and universities.
- Sponsored by the Mathematical Association of America (MAA).
- Open to all NIU undergraduates interested in advanced mathematical problem-solving.
- Complimentary lunch provided between sessions.
Next competition: Saturday, Dec. 5, 2026, at 9 a.m.
Preparation materials are available on the Putnam Archive website.
NIU STEM Fest
NIU STEM Fest is a campus-wide celebration of discovery and innovation — one of the largest public outreach events at NIU.
The School of Mathematical and Statistical Sciences joins departments across campus to welcome thousands of visitors for a day of interactive exploration across science, technology, engineering, arts and mathematics.
- Over 5,000 visitors attend annually. Open to the public as well as the campus community.
- Spans MLK Commons, Holmes Student Center and Founders Memorial Library.
- Hands-on activities that make mathematics engaging, visual and accessible.
Next event: Saturday, Sept. 19, 2026 from 10 a.m.– 3 p.m.
