The School of Mathematical and Statistical Sciences at Northern Illinois University builds on a long tradition of excellence while advancing a bold new vision for quantitative education, research and discovery. Created through the unification of the Department of Mathematical Sciences and the Department of Statistics and Actuarial Science, the school brings together complementary disciplines to foster innovation in teaching, research, consulting and service within the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences.
We are organized into two academic divisions: mathematics and mathematics education and statistics and actuarial Science, while also embracing the rapidly growing field of data science through partnerships across NIU. Faculty and students engage in research spanning the full spectrum of modern inquiry, from pure and applied mathematics and mathematics education to machine learning, Bayesian statistics, actuarial science and high-dimensional data analysis, with applications across science, industry and public policy.
Our academic programs prepare you for success in an increasingly data-driven world. Undergraduate students may pursue Bachelor of Science degrees in mathematical sciences, statistics or actuarial science, as well as a mathematics educator licensure program. Graduate students can earn Master of Science degrees in mathematics, statistics or mathematics teaching.
Student success is at the heart of everything we do. Through undergraduate research, the Putnam Competition and our consulting services and applied learning experiences, students apply quantitative methods to real-world challenges. We are committed to fostering a sense of belonging, broadening participation in the mathematical and statistical sciences and developing resilient, innovative thinkers equipped to make meaningful contributions in their professions, communities and beyond.
By connecting mathematical theory, statistical reasoning and data-driven discovery, we prepare the next generation of problem-solvers, innovators and leaders to address complex challenges in an increasingly interconnected world. We invite you to explore what the school has to offer and to join a community dedicated to discovery, innovation and impact.
