NIU Cares Day of Service has traditionally served as a campuswide day of community service occurring once every semester.
NIU Cares Day of Service is about education and understanding of local issues and needs in addition to direct service. Through participation from the Huskie community and collaboration with our surrounding service partners, we hope to truly engage with our local communities and make impacts that matter.
Volunteer Opportunities
NIU Cares volunteers spend the day planting, painting, cleaning, sorting, assisting with events and various other tasks around the county. Volunteer teams will be assigned to project sites according to the needs of the organizations and the experience level of the teams.
Community Benefits
Last year's event included over 60 project sites that received assistance from over 500 NIU volunteers! Organizations who have benefited from NIU Cares include:
- DeKalb Park District
- Genoa Park District
- Opportunity House
- Kishwaukee Family YMCA
- Hope Haven
- Local DeKalb area residents
Through your participation, NIU students, faculty and staff develop an awareness of the mission and needs of your organization, which in turn may foster future support from interested individuals. Ultimately, the assistance provided on NIU Cares benefits the residents of Sycamore and DeKalb while providing an opportunity to build a stronger relationship with the NIU community.
