Family Weekend
September 10-12, 2021

We are so excited to welcome our Huskie Families back to campus September 10-12 for Family Weekend, especially after the last 18 months of hybrid and virtual connections. This year’s Family Weekend happens just two short weeks after the semester starts which means you don’t have to go that long without seeing your Huskie and coming back to our beautiful NIU campus!

The Family Weekend schedule below will continue to expand and student organizations return to campus and more campus and community events are identified. If you aren’t already receiving our Family Connections newsletters, be sure to sign up today! (red box on the right).

While registration for Family Weekend is not required, doing so will help us to estimate numbers for events where we are providing food or other resources. Additionally, if you register, we can follow up on all things Family Weekend and be sure that you don’t miss out on the experiences you want to enjoy!

Parking is open and free to family members beginning at 4:30 p.m. on Friday. For those coming on Friday, you can park in the Visitor’s Lot near the Holmes Student Center for free by presenting our Family Weekend pass (to be delivered with registration for Family Weekend) or by mentioning that you have come to NIU for Family Weekend.

For those of you attending the Family Weekend Tailgate and/or the football game, be sure to indicate so in the Family Weekend Registration so we can send you specific information on event parking. For any of your parking questions, you can also check out our Parking Services website and/or our parking map.

We invite you to stay in the Hotel at Holmes, located in the heart of campus and close to all of your weekend activities. Wake up and head to the ground floor of the Student Center for some Starbucks before you head out to explore campus or the community!

For our NIU parents and family we offer the discounted rate of $71.00 plus tax (normally valued at $89.00 plus tax).

Hotel at Holmes also has a stay three, the fourth night is free program. Not planning on staying in town that long? No problem! The hotel stays do not need to be consecutive to qualify. Stay two nights during Family Weekend and then come back for Homecoming, a spring visit or Commencement!

While you are here, check out our local options for dining and entertainment, but also consider staying on campus for a true Huskie experience! Whether you grab something from the Huskie Den or Qdoba in the Holmes Student Center, or enjoy an Einstein’s bagel or sandwich over in the Library, NIU has options for you.

We also want to invite you into the dining hall with your Huskie. Huskie Families can eat with their student in New Hall or Neptune Dining Halls for $2 off meal price making lunch $6.25 and dinner $7.25. Share in the Huskie experience by enjoying a variety of delectable food options in residential dining with your beloved family and fellow Huskies.

Check out what’s for lunch and dinner before you decide where to eat. It’s an awesome feature that not only allows you and your Huskie to access daily menus throughout the semester, but it also lists the top eight allergens when applicable, as well as the caloric index for each item served. It’s an amazing perk specific to residential dining.

Don’t forget to join the Student Government Association (SGA) on Sunday from 9 a.m. – noon for a free pancake breakfast before you hit the road.

NIU is fortunate to be a part of a community that is so dedicated to our CommUniversity partnership. While you are here, we hope you Explore DeKalb County and all it has to offer. Check out the virtual Visitor’s Guide or start by wandering through the downtown areas of DeKalb and Sycamore.

Businesses offering discounts or special shows for Family Weekend include:

  • Whiskey Acres- Showcasing a different food truck and musical performance each evening.

Please note: The safety of our Huskie community is our priority. We will continue to update our families with information and updates as they become available. As of August 18, masks are required on campus in any indoor space.
