What did you want to be when you were growing up? Are you pursuing that as a major, or have you taken another path?
As a child, I wanted to be an inventor and work with robots. I am fortunate to be pursuing that passion now through my major in mechatronics.

What is your major (and/or minor) and why did you decide on this course of study?
My major is mechatronics engineering. I chose this field because it is one of the fastest growing areas in engineering, combining mechanical, electrical and computer systems. It also allows me to pursue my passion for robotics.

Have you conducted an internship?
Yes

How did you get your internship, and where was it?
I have had two internships so far. Most recently, I worked at R+D Custom Automation this past summer. I was able to secure that position through the professional connections I built during my previous internship at AbbVie.

How did your internship help prepare you for your career?
My internships helped me strengthen my teamwork skills and gain a clearer understanding of how an automation company operates. They also provided valuable networking opportunities, allowing me to build connections that continue to open new doors for my future career.

What has been something you have found pleasantly surprising about your experience at NIU?
I’ve been pleasantly surprised by the strong sense of community at NIU. There is almost always something happening on campus and opportunities to meet new people, making it a great place to connect and get involved.

How have you connected with other students to study for classes, meet new people or form new friendships?
I often connect with classmates through Discord for studying and collaboration. Beyond academics, the best place I’ve met new people and formed lasting friendships has been the NIU Tabletop Gaming Club.

Are you involved in any student organizations, mentoring programs or extra-curricular activities? If so, which ones? How have they added to your experience as a Huskie?
I am currently the president of the NIU Tabletop Gaming Club, which I first joined as a freshman. Through the club, I’ve met some of my closest friends and found a community that has truly made me feel like I belong at NIU.

What NIU offices, departments or resources have helped you feel safe, supported and successful? And how?
The faculty within my program have been a great source of support, always willing to answer questions and guide me toward opportunities. In addition, campus resources like the Career Services office have been helpful in preparing me for internships and future career paths.

What Honors Program opportunities or support have helped you get closer to your academic or career goals so far?
The University Honors Program has provided me with a supportive environment and resources that help me stay focused on my goals. Having access to honors housing also gave me a strong foundation my first year, making the transition to college much smoother.

What do you enjoy the most about the Honors Program?
One of my favorite experiences with the Honors Program was participating in the escape room outings during my first two years. They were a fun way to connect with other students and created some of my best memories in the program.

Who has been one of your favorite instructors/professors and why? What course did they teach?
One of my favorite professors has been Dr. Peter Lin. In addition to serving as my academic advisor, he is one of the two mechatronics engineering professors, so I’ve had the opportunity to learn from him in multiple courses. His guidance as both a teacher and mentor has been a constant throughout my academic career.

How have you benefited by attending class regularly?
Attending class regularly has helped me stay engaged with the material and build strong relationships with my professors and classmates. It also keeps me on track with coursework and allows me to take full advantage of hands-on opportunities in my major.

Where is your favorite spot on campus or in the community? Why are you drawn to it?
My favorite spot on campus is a small bench by the East Lagoon that overlooks the water toward Altgeld Hall. I think it’s one of the most beautiful views on campus, and it’s the perfect place to sit and read or just take a moment to relax.

What advice would you give to a student who is researching colleges to apply to?
My best advice is to look for a college that is both affordable and within a reasonable distance from home. Having family close by can be a huge support system, especially if an emergency ever comes up.

Why is a college education important to you?
A college education is important to me because it gives me the knowledge and skills I need to pursue my passion for robotics and engineering. It also opens doors to opportunities, from internships to leadership experiences, that will prepare me for a successful career.

What strategies do you use to manage your time between the responsibilities of school, work, friends and family?
Balancing everything can definitely be a challenge, but I’ve learned to stay organized by using calendars and setting clear priorities. I also try to dedicate specific time to school, work and friends, so that each gets the attention it deserves.

How do you stay informed about events and services that are available on campus?
I usually stay informed through the daily campus emails, which highlight upcoming opportunities and events. I also check Huskie Hub when I want to explore what’s happening around campus.

What do you do to relax or recharge?
I like to relax by spending time with friends, playing board games or just finding a quiet spot on campus to read. Taking a little time for myself helps me recharge and stay focused.

Please tell us about your job and hobbies.
During my internship, I worked with a team of engineers to design custom solutions for pharmaceutical companies, focusing on implementing collaborative robots into their production lines. Outside of work and school, my hobbies include playing games, reading, baking and working out.
