What did you want to be when you were growing up? Are you pursuing that as a major, or have you taken another path?
I have always wanted to become a nurse since I was a little girl. The idea of helping people has always been something I love, and the help nurses provide is something I find so admirable. I am currently in my senior year of nursing where I will be getting my B.S. in nursing.
What is your major (and/or minor) and why did you decide on this course of study?
I am majoring in nursing and minoring in family and child studies. I have always been drawn to taking care of babies and kids, so I wanted to add a child development minor to learn as much about this population as possible.
What has been something you have found pleasantly surprising about your experience at NIU?
I have been so lucky to be involved in so many organizations at NIU. There are so many opportunities to get involved, and it is really easy to find your place at NIU.
How have you connected with other students to study for classes, meet new people or form new friendships?
I have met a lot of my closest friends through Greek life. I am a member of Sigma Sigma Sigma sorority, and my college experience would not be the same without this experience. Greek life is an amazing way to connect with likeminded individuals.
Are you involved in any student organizations, mentoring programs or extra-curricular activities? If so, which ones? How have they added to your experience as a Huskie?
I am currently the president of the Student Nurses Organization. This organization has helped me learn so much about leadership and how to make a difference. Planning various fundraisers and social events has really made nursing school feel more like home.
What Honors Program opportunities or support have helped you get closer to your academic or career goals so far?
Honors program scholarships have been a huge help in my college career. Being recognized for my academic achievements and getting assistance in paying for my education means a lot to me.
What do you enjoy the most about the Honors Program?
I enjoy the connections you make in the honors program. We are all working toward the same goal, and it is nice to be surrounded by people who lift you up.
Who has been one of your favorite instructors/professors and why? What course did they teach?
Dr. Stephanie Uhr has by far been my favorite professor. She was my obstetrics professor, and she is so kind and really wants the best for her students. I always felt very supported and understood by her.
How have you benefited by attending class regularly?
Going to class regularly has helped me establish a good schedule and helped me thrive in my academics.
Where is your favorite spot on campus or in the community? Why are you drawn to it?
Cast Iron Coffee is my favorite because it is the perfect study spot.
What advice would you give to a student who is researching colleges to apply to?
Take a campus tour and see what the campus is really like. Knowing what your living environment is truly going to be like can be super helpful in making these decisions.
Why is a college education important to you?
A college education is important to me because I want to be well educated and achieve my dreams of becoming a nurse.
What strategies do you use to manage your time between the responsibilities of school, work, friends and family?
I plan out my weeks, including when I will complete assignments, that way I have time for school, friends and family.
How do you stay informed about events and services that are available on campus?
Huskie Hub!
What do you do to relax or recharge?
I go on walks outside to get fresh air and relax.
Please tell us about your job and hobbies.
