What did you want to be when you were growing up? Are you pursuing that as a major, or have you taken another path?
Like many little kids, I wanted to be a vet because I loved animals. Then I grew up and learned I'm not a science person!

What is your major (and/or minor) and why did you decide on this course of study?
My bachelor’s is in political science, and I’m currently working on an online master's degree in accountancy. Political science is so open ended, and I didn't have a clear career path. I spent some time in local government, then worked on a political campaign for a season and realized that wasn't the right path for me. I found myself back in local government, this time in finance, and really loved it. I'm not a traditional student anymore and couldn't leave my full-time job, so the online Master of Accountancy program at NIU was perfect for me.

What has been something you have found pleasantly surprising about your experience at NIU?
The college where I received my bachelor's was very small, so I didn't have any experience with such a large university. I was pleasantly surprised to find that it doesn't feel like you're lost in a sea of tens of thousands of students. All of the faculty and staff have been easy to contact and friendly and have worked with me as an individual.

What NIU offices, departments or resources have helped you feel safe, supported and successful? And how?
The Office of Online Learning has supported me through a major life change. I had a baby and took a semester off. My advisors/support specialists in that office gave me reassurance when I took my leave of absence and have been very supportive of my return. I never felt judged or pressured to make certain decisions.

Who has been one of your favorite instructors/professors and why? What course did they teach?
Truly, every professor I've had in the MAC program has been amazing, but two in particular stand out. Dr. Candice Hux (Financial Reporting II) went above and beyond as a professor. She provided so many resources, practice problems and opportunities for support. You could tell she honestly cared about her students and their success. I've really enjoyed Seminar in Accounting with Dr. Brad Cripe this summer. His teaching style is great. The material is intimidating and new to most of us, but he makes it approachable. He still remembers what it's like to be a student; he knows where our downfalls will be and tries to meet us there and prevent them.

What advice would you give to a student who is researching colleges to apply to?
I would say to research a variety. Look at schools of different sizes, locations, etc. You may be surprised by what type of environment draws you in.

Why is a college education important to you?
A college education isn't the only way to have a successful career, but it was the way for me. I also believe getting a college education and opening yourself up to learn about subjects you haven't learned about before is a great way to become more well-rounded. And if you go away for school, you’re able to meet people from around the world and from all walks of life, which I believe makes you a more empathetic and understanding person.

What strategies do you use to manage your time between the responsibilities of school, work, friends and family?
The MAC program is 100% online, and I have a full-time job and a family and home to take care of. In order to not fall behind or lose my mind, I have to schedule out my time and try to be disciplined. I look at how many hours of lectures I have for the week and fill my lunch breaks and other gaps in my day with that. I try to do as much schoolwork during the week as I can so I can focus on my family during the weekend. I also have to communicate well with my husband so we know what we have on our plates so and can support each other.

How do you stay informed about events and services that are available on campus?
I read emails!

What do you do to relax or recharge?
Life is really busy right now, but I try to find time to read. I also enjoy birding, whether doing it from my backyard or going on field trips with my local birding club. I'm not sure how refreshing it is, but I also spend too much time scrolling on the internet during my down time.

Please tell us about your job and hobbies.
I work in the finance department of a municipality where I wear a lot of hats, but my main responsibility is running payroll. My work-life balance is excellent, which allows me more time for school. I'm very lucky!
