What did you want to be when you were growing up? Are you pursuing that as a major, or have you taken another path?
I always wanted to be a contributing member of society and help people. I spent four years in the Air Force as part of a weapons troop for F-15s, and now I want to give back in a more positive way by teaching math.
What is your major (and/or minor) and why did you decide on this course of study?
My major is middle level teaching and learning, specifically math. I decided on this because I knew I could do it well, which gives me positive reinforcement and makes me feel good about myself.
What has been something you have found pleasantly surprising about your experience at NIU?
How helpful the teachers are. If you ask, you shall receive.
How have you connected with other students to study for classes, meet new people or form new friendships?
I’ve connected with others in many ways, including as a teaching assistant (TA) for two sections of college algebra here at NIU.
What NIU offices, departments or resources have helped you feel safe, supported and successful? And how?
The Mathematics Assistance Center in the library has helped me overcome obstacles in the curriculum. It is a great resource!
What Honors Program opportunities or support have helped you get closer to your academic or career goals so far?
I feel like being a teaching assistant (TA) has helped me grow as a math teacher by giving me opportunities to work one on one with students.
Who has been one of your favorite instructors/professors and why? What course did they teach?
Allison O’Conner and William O’Conner have helped me a lot with math and by suggesting I become a TA to get my foot in the door for teaching.
How have you benefited by attending class regularly?
I have benefitted by attending every single lecture, because you never know what you might miss.
Where is your favorite spot on campus or in the community? Why are you drawn to it?
I am drawn to the rock garden between the math buildings because it blocks some wind and is generally quiet.
What advice would you give to a student who is researching colleges to apply to?
Go to NIU and do all your homework!
Why is a college education important to you?
Teaching is a goal of mine that will help me better myself and others.
What strategies do you use to manage your time between the responsibilities of school, work, friends and family?
I use an assignment notebook. It’s essential for time management. And lots of sticky notes!
How do you stay informed about events and services that are available on campus?
My NIU student email always gives announcements about campus events.
What do you do to relax or recharge?
I play World of Warcraft.
Please tell us about your job and hobbies.
I like skateboarding and spending time with my girlfriend.
