What did you want to be when you were growing up? Are you pursuing that as a major, or have you taken another path?
Growing up, I had various career paths that I wanted to pursue. I wanted to be a lawyer and then a teacher, both of which I am not pursuing. I eventually made some changes my freshman year of undergrad that led me to where I am today! I currently want to become a registered dietitian with a clinical focus.

What is your major (and/or minor) and why did you decide on this course of study?
When I was in undergrad I originally went for elementary education, but I did not enjoy any of my core classes. I only really liked my nutrition elective class, which encouraged me to make the switch to dietetics (M.S. in nutrition and dietetics). I have always enjoyed learning about nutrition and have found a true passion for this science.

What has been something you have found pleasantly surprising about your experience at NIU?
I really appreciate the faculty here at NIU. I have had the pleasure of working with several members of the College of Health and Human Sciences and have had a great experience.

How have you connected with other students to study for classes, meet new people or form new friendships?
Yes! My cohort here at NIU is one big family. We are all going through the same program (M.S. in nutrition and dietetics), which allows us to look to each other for support. Sometimes we even have game nights and spend time outside of the classroom with each other, too.

Are you involved in any student organizations, mentoring programs or extra-curricular activities? If so, which ones? How have they added to your experience as a Huskie?
I am currently not participating in any extra-curriculars here at NIU.

What NIU offices, departments or resources have helped you feel safe, supported and successful? And how?
I have been able to use Counseling and Consultation Services, which is located in the Peters Campus Life Building. I was able to feel supported during a rough time in my life. The support from the individuals here allowed me to become a better student and a better me.

Who has been one of your favorite instructors/professors and why? What course did they teach?
So far, the professor I have enjoyed the most is Dr. Waters, who taught my Nutrition 645 - Macronutrients class in a fun and effective way. I was finally able to understand concepts that I had been struggling with since undergrad, and I greatly appreciate her for that. I also loved how Dr. Waters used multiple teaching formats for the class, so that various learning styles were touched upon. One particular format that sticks out to me is when she had us draw the different pathways for various metabolic processes in the body.

How have you benefited by attending class regularly?
I believe that attending class regularly has allowed me to become the best student possible. I enjoy the "in-person" experience of learning and the camaraderie that comes with it.

Where is your favorite spot on campus or in the community? Why are you drawn to it?
My favorite places on campus are the Recreation Center and Founders Memorial Library. I enjoy strength training a couple times a week, so the Rec Center has become one of my most sought-after places. I also enjoy the library, because the warm and quiet environment pushes me to focus and encourages me to excel in my studies.

What advice would you give to a student who is researching colleges to apply to?
I would say look for a place that feels like home. It's easy enough to look for colleges that have your major, but a lot of people switch their degrees. Find somewhere that you really, truly fall in love with and go there.

Why is a college education important to you?
A college education is important to me because it opens doors to different aspects of life that would've previously been unattainable. I have always loved learning, and receiving my master’s degree has been a source of pride for me.

What strategies do you use to manage your time between the responsibilities of school, work, friends and family?
While it may be difficult, it is all about time management. While balancing my job, I try to focus on my studies and classes during the week. Sometimes I have to do some work on the weekends, but not always. I also like to stay organized! I use apps on my computer and cell phone and even write my to-dos out on a whiteboard calendar and an agenda.

How do you stay informed about events and services that are available on campus?
I follow NIU on various social media platforms like Instagram and Facebook! I also look at the bulletin boards while walking around campus.

What do you do to relax or recharge?
Having such a busy life requires various ways to recuperate. I love reading or playing with my cat, Shiloh. I like being able to come home and have a cup of coffee while I enjoy the peace and quiet. I also enjoy listening to music while doing household tasks.

Please tell us about your job and hobbies.
Currently, I work at TJ Maxx here in DeKalb. I have been there for about a year, and I really enjoy my time there. The work environment is positive, and everyone is so much fun to be around.
