Track 2: Sustainability and Environmental Challenges in Southeast Asia
Deadline: January 15, 2027
Southeast Asia's environments have long shaped, and been shaped by, human societies. Forests, rivers, coastlines, mountains, climate, and agricultural landscapes are not simply physical settings but places of livelihood, cultural meaning, political contestation, spiritual significance, and historical change. Today, communities across the region confront a wide range of environmental challenges, including climate change, extreme weather, biodiversity loss, resource extraction, water pollution, urban expansion, and ecological degradation. At the same time, local communities, Indigenous peoples, activists, artists, policymakers, and scholars continue to develop new ways of understanding and responding to these transformations.
This track invites interdisciplinary perspectives on the relationships among ecology, natural resources, climate, water, society, culture, and power in Southeast Asia. We welcome contributions that examine how environmental issues intersect with questions of history, identity, governance, development, inequality, heritage, policy, and social justice. Attention will be given to the environmental experiences of Borneo and Sarawak, while comparative and transnational perspectives are also encouraged.
We especially encourage submissions from the natural sciences as well as the humanities and social sciences that explore how people experience, interpret, represent, govern, and contest environmental change. Regular faculty appointees, independent scholars, graduate students, and practitioner perspectives are welcome.
