Research, scholarship and artistry (collectively, scholarly activity) are fundamental to the mission of NIU. Further, the talent and expertise of faculty, staff and students are critical to address the complex challenges faced by society today. The following guidance supports the safe continuation of scholarly activity.

The multi-phase reopening of scholarly facilities and spaces began in May 2020, and is detailed in the Guidance and Reopening of Facilities and Spaces for Research, Scholarship and Artistry Plan. NIU is currently is in the fourth and final phase. At this time, all facilities and spaces can remain in operation with appropriate precautions and safety requirements as listed below:
