Student Health Insurance Frequently Asked Questions

Why have I been charged for student health insurance I did not need?

For the safety and financial security of our students, NIU requires all qualified students to have insurance while attending. To secure the best pricing and ensure compliance with this requirement, the university uses an opt-out approach to the insurance program. If you're a qualified student and do not need the insurance offered by the university, you can waive this requirement by showing proof of other similar coverage.

Can I waive the insurance if I have my own?

Most likely, yes. You may opt out of student health insurance during the waiver period by providing proof of other comparable coverage. Comparable insurance must meet Affordable Care Act (ACA) requirements. The waiver option is not available to first-semester international students.

How is student health insurance charged?

Student health insurance is charged per semester and automatically applied to your bursar account.

If I waive the insurance in the fall of the academic year, do I have to waive again in the spring?

No, if you waived the insurance and the waiver was accepted, it is in effect through the full academic year. You will need to waive again the following academic year.

I waived the insurance in the fall, but now I need it for the spring. Can I enroll?
