Student Health Insurance Frequently Asked Questions

The NIU Student Insurance Plan is an affordable, high-quality insurance program designed to meet the needs of our students, with optional coverage for dependents. The insurance carrier for the academic year 2026-2027 is UnitedHealthcare Student Resources (UHCSR) and is a PPO.

Use the SHI website to find information about the policy, benefits, providers and more.

For the safety and financial security of our students, NIU requires all qualified students to have insurance while attending. To secure the best pricing and ensure compliance with this requirement, the university uses an opt-out approach to the insurance program

Why was I charged for student insurance?

You are assessed the student insurance fee because you are taking courses designated as "on-campus" and have met the automatic enrollment criteria.

If you feel this is an error, please contact your advisor or the registration office to correct/confirm this.

Can I waive the insurance if I have my own?

Most likely, yes. You may opt out of student health insurance during the waiver period by providing proof of other comparable coverage. Comparable insurance must meet Affordable Care Act (ACA) requirements. The waiver option is not available to first-semester international students.

How is student health insurance charged?

Student health insurance is charged per semester and automatically applied to your bursar account.

If I waive the insurance in the fall of the academic year, do I have to waive again in the spring?

No, if you waived in the fall and the waiver was accepted, it is in effect through the full academic year. You will need to waive again the following academic year.

I waived the insurance in the fall, but now I need it for spring. Can I enroll?

Yes, you can enroll during the open enrollment/waiver period for the semester. Contact us for more information.

How do I verify that I have or have not been charged for the student health insurance?

  1. Log in to MyNIU.
  2. Choose the Financial Account tile, then Account Services.
  3. Select Term Acct Detail, then Semester.
  4. Look for the Student Health Insurance fee located under MISC.

When will I receive my insurance card?

After you complete your registration, (make an account) with UHCSR, you can access your ID card, through your account.

Does student health insurance cover dental and vision?

No, dental and vision coverage are separate options you can choose. This is an out-of-pocket expense the student may choose. Learn more about student health insurance options.

What are the current student health insurance benefits?

View the current schedule of benefits (PDF).

What are the effective coverage dates?

  • Fall semester coverage dates: August 1 to December 31
  • Spring semester coverage dates: January 1 to July 31

Please note that your current insurance coverage must be active on or before the semester's coverage effective date for your waiver to be approved. Coverage that begins after the semester coverage start date does not meet waiver requirements. No exceptions are granted.

If you do not take any action to waive, you are enrolled in the student insurance by default.

To ensure fairness and compliance, the established guidelines are applied uniformly to all students. Northern Illinois University's requirements must be followed as written and exceptions cannot be granted.
