Chamber Music Encounters

Members of the Avalon  String Quartet

April 3-4, 2020

This intensive music program brings together some of the best high school string chamber ensembles in Illinois. Students have the opportunity to work with NIU faculty members and the renowned Avalon String Quartet. Activities take place over the course of two days and include:

  • A faculty performance
  • Group discussions
  • Coaching sessions
  • Master classes
  • A final performance

The program takes place in the Music Building. Students stay in the nearby Holmes Student Center.

Auditions and Registration

Cost: $120 per person (includes tuition, meals and accommodations)

Cost for music directors/chaperones: $80 (covers accommodations and meals)

Audition deadline: March 1, 2020

Registration deadline: March 20, 2020

Payment is due two weeks before the event. This event is limited to five ensembles.

An audition is required. Submit an audio recording of your ensemble and the audition application form (PDF). After you receive notification of acceptance, submit a registration form as soon as possible.

If you cancel five or more business days before the event, you may request a refund from Kristin Sherman at or 815-753-1450. No refunds will be made after this time unless NIU cancels the event.


Students work with several NIU faculty members, as well as the Avalon String Quartet, one of the country's leading chamber music ensembles. The members of the Avalon String Quartet include: Blaise Magniere, Marie Wang, Anthony Devroye and Cheng-Hou Lee are also NIU faculty members.
