Respiratory Protection Training

The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) requires that those whose work requires them to wear a respirator, even occasionally, needs to be trained in the following:

  • Respiratory hazards to which they may be exposed during routine and emergencies
  • Proper use of respirators, including putting on and removing them, maintenance and storage
  • Why a respirator is necessary and how improper fit, usage or maintenance can compromise the protective effect
  • Limitations and capabilities of the types of respirators
  • How to use a respirator effectively in emergency situations, including those when it malfunctions
  • Medical signs and symptoms that limit or prevent effective use of respirators
  • Fit testing of tight-fitting respirators
  • Annual refresher training
