Our Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Science in Economics programs emphasis a balance of theoretical and empirical analysis of various problems and decisions. Graduates with a degree in economics are well suited for data analysis and other decision making careers. Our degrees also act as excellent stepping stones for advanced degrees in Economics or other related fields. Students in our B.S. program interested in earning an advanced degree should sign up for our accelerated BS/MA program which allows undergraduate seniors to complete graduate level classes to count for both their B.S. and M.A. degrees allowing these students to earn their M.A. in Economics in just one year after their earn their B.S.
We also offer a flexible minor in economics that pairs well with almost any other major degree program offered at NIU.
Students currently enrolled in any 100, 200, 0r 300 level economics course who are in need of some extra help are invited to visit our ECON study lab. The study lab is a walk-in help center staffed by current economics graduate students located in Zulauf 507 and is typically open Monday through Thursdays from 12:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. (hours may vary).
Graduates with advanced degrees in economics are in high demand across all fields. We offer both a Master's and Doctoral degree in Economics, both of which are recognized by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security as STEM fields. Students are trained in both the theoretical and empirical methods and have been placed in private, public, and academic sector jobs around the world. The department hosts a weekly seminar series on Wednesdays where students and faculty can share ideas from their own research or with that of invited guests through the NIU Graduate Colloquium Series. Seminars are open to the public and are typically held in DuSable 280 starting at 12:00 p.m.
The department also offers a graduate certificate in Financial Engineering and students in our Ph.D. program can earn an M.S. in Statistics while working toward their Ph.D. in Economics.
Have a nice summer break!
