Major in Economics

The Department of Economics offers flexible degree options to match students’ academic and career goals. The Bachelor of Arts provides a broad foundation in economic theory with a liberal arts emphasis. The Bachelor of Science offers a more quantitative approach, ideal for students interested in data analysis, research or graduate study. Students can also specialize with a financial economics emphasis or pursue an accelerated B.S./M.A. program that leads to a master’s degree in just one additional year.

  • ECON 260: Principles of Microeconomics
  • ECON 261: Principles of Macroeconomics
  • ECON 360: Intermediate Microeconomics
  • ECON 361: Intermediate Macroeconomics
  • Data analysis course such as ECON 290 or a comparable business statistics option
  • Capstone research paper required in ECON 492 or a 400-level course approved by the director of undergraduate studies

Bachelor of Science

  • ECON 390 and 390A: Econometrics and Lab
  • ECON 391 or CSCI 240: Quantitative or Programming Foundations
  • 18 credits of upper-division ECON electives
  • Option 1: Includes MATH 210, MATH 211, and STAT 200
  • Option 2 (recommended for graduate school): Includes MATH 229, MATH 230, and STAT 300

B.S. With Emphasis in Financial Economics

  • ECON 340: Financial Economics
  • ECON 442: Financial Engineering
  • ECON 490 and 492: Advanced Statistics and Research Methods
  • ECON 393: Mathematical Methods in Economics
  • CSCI 240 and Calculus I and II for quantitative depth

Recommended: Financial derivatives courses such as ECON 460X or ACSC 460

Bachelor of Arts

  • Completion of a foreign language requirement
  • 21 credits of upper-division ECON electives
  • One statistics course such as STAT 100, STAT 200, or UBUS 223
