Server Hosting and Administration

NIU’s Division of Information Technology (DoIT) provides and supports a variety of hosting and management options for both physical and virtual server environments.

Virtual Servers: Virtualization allows multiple and independent virtual machines (VMs) on a single physical server. Currently managing more than 1,000 VM’s, DoIT has dramatically lessened the cost of cooling systems and network infrastructure while saving additional space in our data centers. Moreover, these VM’s can be configured and delivered within a week of receiving the customer request: a fraction of the time it would take to quote, purchase and install a physical server.

At NIU, RAM and CPU can easily be scaled up or down for anticipated increases or decreases in use throughout the year. Popular cloud-hosting services like Amazon and Microsoft currently do not include support or backups in their advertised monthly fees, making the DoIT offering more than cost-competitive.  DoIT support includes:

  • OS support (Windows or Linux) including license fees, upgrades and security patches;
  • nightly backups with restores available for 30 days;
  • hardware maintenance and monitoring 24 / 7 / 365 with alerts and optional reports emailed to customers;
  • high-speed low latency interconnections to enterprise grade storage and the NIU network with bandwidth speeds up to 1Gbps;
  • network connection fees; and
  • virus protection

Physical Server Administration: Because of the benefits virtualization brings to most applications, fewer than 100 physical servers remain in DoIT’s Data Centers under central management. Central support includes:

  • OS Management and Maintenance
    • consultation and assistance with purchasing;
    • OS installation, updates and upgrades;
    • security patches, fixes and virus protection;
    • monitoring and audit of running services;
    • hardware troubleshooting with replacement for parts under warranty or under third-party service contract and stocked parts for Compaq ProLiant servers.
  • Backup and Restore
    • installation of backup software and upgrades
    • full backups of all files, regardless of change, processed monthly;
    • level 5 backups of only files that have changed since the last full backup, processed two weeks after the full monthly backup;
    • routine restore requests (10/month);
    • retention for 2 months; and
    • backups cloned and stored offsite.

Central support does not include the cost of network connections nor is the customer given physical access to the Data Centers.

Physical Server Co-Location: Approximately 10 physical servers are co-located in the Data Center but managed by distributed IT support.
