Diversity and Inclusion at NIU

At NIU, we're committed to confronting racism and all forms of discrimination. We welcome all members of the campus community to join us in working toward positive change. By taking action, sharing resources and providing support we can continue to find strength in our diversity. Learn more about equity at NIU.

National Day of Racial Healing

The National Day of Racial Healing is celebrated yearly, the Tuesday after MLK Day. 2024 marks the first time NIU will celebrate this day. The National Day of Racial Healing is a time to reflect on our shared values and create a path towards #HowWeHeal from the effects of racism and bring all people together in our common humanity.

Racial healing is the experience shared by all people when they speak openly and hear the truth about past wrongs and the negative impacts created by individual and systemic racism. The myth of a human hierarchy can be addressed and processed through conscious efforts.

Racial healing helps to build trust among people and restores communities to wholeness, so they can work together on changing the systems and structures that affirm the inherent value of all people.

Racial equity is the condition where people of all races and ethnicities can live in a society where a person’s racial identity does not determine how they are treated nor predict life outcomes.

Achieving racial equity requires both systems transformation and racial healing through education, direct speaking & listening, and communal action.
