Master of Arts in Economics

Lead and innovate in academic, government and industry careers.

Our M.A. in economics program offers a core set of courses in econometrics, giving you the skills to succeed as a data analyst. You can then tailor your study to your goals by taking electives in areas such as health economics, public economics or Ph.D.-level field courses. A concentration in financial economics is also available, with courses focused on financial markets. Our graduates find employment in private firms and government agencies or go on to pursue a Ph.D. at NIU or another university.

How to Apply

You’ll apply through the Graduate School.

Applications are accepted year-round, though we rarely admit students for spring. Once an application meets Graduate School requirements, it is forwarded to the department for review.

Admissions decisions are sent by email. Funding decisions are made in March for the following fall semester.

Curriculum and Requirements

In your first year, you’ll complete core coursework in Microeconomic Theory (ECON 660), Macroeconomic Theory (ECON 661), Statistics and Probability (ECON 590), and Math for Economists (ECON 591). If you don’t pass these theory courses with a B or better, you’ll have to take the M.A. comprehensive exam during the first full week of August between your first and second year.

By the end of your second year, you’ll complete your M.A. research paper. Once approved by a faculty member, the M.A. degree is awarded.
