Your NIU email is the official way the university communicates information to you. Spend time each day reviewing any emails that you've received.
Your NIU student email address is your Z-ID@students.niu.edu. Information about your newly created Z-ID was sent to the personal email account you used when you applied to NIU. If you haven't yet, see Account ID Activation and Access for full instructions, including how to find your Z-ID if you do not know it.
Your email can be accessed through Microsoft 365.
Download the Outlook App
You can download the Microsoft Outlook app for easy access to your NIU email from your phone. Enable notifications so you'll be notified when you receive emails.

Multifactor Authentication
We use multifactor authentication (MFA) to keep your email secure. You'll use both your password and a code texted to your cell phone to log in. Download the Microsoft Authenticator app for free. Be prepared to provide a phone number as a means of authentication prior to login.

Aside from Outlook, your free access to Microsoft 365 provides access to applications such as Word, Excel, PowerPoint and more.
