What scholarships did you receive and why did you receive them? How has the financial support impacted your experience at NIU?
I received a few merit-based scholarships. By greatly reducing the financial burden of college, I have reduced the amount of financial stress I will have in the future by not having to repay loans.

What did you want to be when you were growing up? Are you pursuing that as a major, or have you taken another path?
When I was growing up, I wanted to work in some sort of financial leadership position. That is what I am pursuing as an accountancy major.

What is your major (and/or minor) and why did you decide on this course of study?
Accountancy. I decided on it because I enjoy it, and there is a need for people with that skill in society.

What has been something you have found pleasantly surprising about your experience at NIU?
The friendliness of the staff and professors. They seem to enjoy the work they do.

How have you connected with other students to study for classes, meet new people or form new friendships?
Typically, I meet people in class as I am a commuter and do not spend much more time on campus than when I am in class.

Are you involved in any student organizations, mentoring programs or extra-curricular activities? If so, which ones? How have they added to your experience as a Huskie?
I am a member of the University Honors Program. Taking classes in a smaller setting has helped me connect with peers and faculty.

What NIU offices, departments or resources have helped you succeed? And how?
The business advising office has been helpful to ensure I am taking the right courses I need to stay on track.

What Honors Program opportunities or support have helped you get closer to your academic or career goals so far?
The honors courses with reduced class sizes have given me the opportunity to work with smaller groups that I wouldn't have had the opportunity to do otherwise.

What do you enjoy the most about the Honors Program?
The course options.

Who has been one of your favorite instructors/professors and why? What course did they teach?
Mrs. Anderson, who taught Communications 100, was wonderful as she connected with students on a personal level and expressed genuine compassion toward us.

How have you benefited by attending class regularly?
By attending all classes, I pick up and retain as much knowledge as possible.

Where is your favorite spot on campus or in the community? Why are you drawn to it?
I like Altgeld Hall on campus. It is a beautiful building, and it is calm and peaceful.

What advice would you give to a student who is researching colleges to apply to?
I would advise them to live within their means. College is a significant investment, and it’s crucial to be mindful of the financial burden it may impose. Striking a balance between pursuing affordable higher education and managing debt responsibly is key.

Why is a college education important to you?
It opens opportunities to the careers I would like to pursue.

What strategies do you use to manage your time between the responsibilities of school, work, friends and family?
Keep a calendar and complete assignments early.

How do you stay informed about events and services that are available on campus?
The university is very good about sending regular email updates to students.

What do you do to relax or recharge?
Run and bicycle.

Please tell us about your job and hobbies.
I am a student worker in the Division of Administration and Finance here at NIU.
