About

NIU cares about the well-being of all students, faculty, staff and community members. We know that individuals who are well are more likely to thrive and flourish. To enhance the wellness and success of our community, we created NIU Well-being.

NIU Well-being is an active and ongoing initiative that aims to inspire and support optimal health and well-being as a foundation for our entire community to flourish. When a campus works together to prioritize, support and create spaces and opportunities to enhance wellness, we are all more able to be well and succeed. Through cross-campus collaboration, our mission is to enhance systemic well-being at NIU by addressing 6 main priorities.

Systemic Well-being Priority Areas

  1. Well-being Equity: Fair treatment, access and opportunity for wellness for everyone.
  2. Well-being for Recruitment, Retention and Success: Well-being is integrated into the foundation of NIU’s strategies for recruitment, retention and success for both students and employees.
  3. Well-being in the Learning Environment: Well-being is embedded as a key theme in NIU academic curriculum, research and learning environments. For example, well-being as part of course syllabi and well-being infused faculty and academic advising.
  4. Well-being in the Built and Natural Environments: Well-being is enhanced through safe and sustainable built and natural environments. For example, physical environments are ADA accessible.
  5. Well-being Culture: Students, employees, community members and visitors identify a culture of well-being on campus, meaning NIU is known as a university that promotes health and well-being. For example, adopt the Okanagan Charter and integrate wellness messaging into campus announcements, events and activities.
  6. Well-being Programs and Services: Establish a system of collaborative programs and services that support all dimensions of individual wellness, which collectively contributes to institutional well-being. For example, create and maintain a dedicated website highlighting health and well-being programs and services available at NIU.
