A Test Score Doesn't Tell Your Story

Test-free Admissions, Scholarships and Honors

At NIU, we know you’re more than a one-time score on the ACT or SAT. The hard work you put in every day shows in your grades — and shows us you're ready to be a Huskie.

That’s why we no longer consider standardized test scores for general admission, merit scholarships or honors. We’ll look at your cumulative high school or transfer GPA.

Guaranteed Admission

Have a cumulative high school or transfer GPA of 3.0 or higher? You're guaranteed general admission!

If your GPA is below 3.0, we'll get to know you through a holistic application review process – a flexible, personalized review of your application and circumstances. We know your grades don't always tell the whole story.

Access to More Scholarships

The greatest reward for your strong academic record is a scholarship. When you apply to NIU, we'll automatically consider you for merit scholarships based on your cumulative high school or transfer GPA alone.

Within Your Reach

With no out-of-state tuition rates and new scholarships, an NIU education is within your reach. You may even be eligible for assistance covering all of our tuition and fees, or a significant portion. Learn more about financial aid options. Our team is ready to discuss your unique needs one-on-one.

Join University Honors

Our University Honors Program uses a holistic review process and does not consider ACT or SAT scores.

“I am one of those students who do not test well. With that comes anxiety, fear of having to do well, fear that this number basically defines your future…NIU is making many leaps to try to set itself apart…”

Naomi Bolden
NIU Student Government Association President,

“Your new policy acknowledges that while excellence, talent, and ambition are evenly distributed, often opportunity is not.”
