What scholarships did you receive and why did you receive them? How has the financial support impacted your experience at NIU?
I received a combination of merit-based, institutional and academic scholarships, including NIU merit scholarships awarded for academic excellence, leadership and community involvement, as well as additional support connected to my major in engineering. These scholarships were awarded based on my academic performance, commitment to service and persistence throughout high school. The financial support has had a major impact on my experience at NIU. It has allowed me to focus fully on my coursework, research opportunities and professional development without the constant stress of financial pressure. Because of this support, I’m able to take advantage of internships, campus involvement and academic resources that are helping me grow both personally and professionally. Most importantly, it has given me the freedom to pursue my goals with confidence, knowing that my education is an investment being supported by people and institutions that believe in my potential.

What did you want to be when you were growing up? Are you pursuing that as a major, or have you taken another path?
Growing up, I always knew I wanted to work in an industry that involved technology. I was drawn to how technology shapes the world around us and creates solutions to real problems. That interest is what ultimately motivated me to pursue a career as an electrical engineering major. While my understanding of what I wanted to do became clearer over time, the path itself feels intentional. Studying electrical engineering allows me to combine my curiosity, problem-solving skills and interest in innovation into something meaningful. It’s a field that challenges me and aligns with the future I’ve always envisioned for myself.

What is your major (and/or minor) and why did you decide on this course of study?
My major is electrical engineering, and I am also pursuing a minor in Black studies. I chose this path because I have always been interested in technology and how it can be used to solve real-world problems. Pairing my major with a minor in Black studies allows me to approach engineering with a broader perspective and a strong sense of purpose, helping me create solutions that are both innovative and socially conscious.

What has been something you have found pleasantly surprising about your experience at NIU?
Something that’s pleasantly surprised me about my experience at NIU is the level of exclusivity and diversity on campus. I’ve been able to learn alongside students from a wide range of backgrounds while still feeling part of a close-knit community. That mix of perspectives has made my classes, projects and campus life much richer than I expected.

How have you connected with other students to study for classes, meet new people or form new friendships?
I’ve been able to build relationships and friendships through the organizations I’m involved with, like the Black Male Initiative (BMI) and the Black Student Union. These groups have allowed me to connect with other students who share similar experiences and goals, while also providing support, mentorship and opportunities to grow, both academically and personally.

Are you involved in any student organizations, mentoring programs or extra-curricular activities? If so, which ones? How have they added to your experience as a Huskie?
Yes, I’m involved in the Black Male Initiative (BMI), the Black Student Union, the Unity Mentoring Initiative and the National Society of Black Engineers (NSBE). These organizations have enriched my experience as a Huskie by helping me build friendships, find mentorship and connect with students who share similar goals. They’ve also given me opportunities to grow as a leader, contribute to the community and make my time at NIU more meaningful and rewarding.

What NIU offices, departments or resources have helped you feel safe, supported and successful? And how?
Several NIU offices and resources have helped me feel safe, supported and successful. The Center for Black Studies and programs like BMI and the Unity Mentoring Initiative have provided mentorship, guidance and a strong community. Additionally, academic resources like tutoring and advising have helped me stay on track in my courses. Together, these offices and programs have created an environment where I can focus on learning, growing and achieving my goals with confidence.

What Honors Program opportunities or support have helped you get closer to your academic or career goals so far?
The Honors Program has provided opportunities and support that have brought me closer to my academic and career goals. Through discussion-based classes, access to mentorship from faculty and opportunities for research and leadership, I’ve been able to deepen my knowledge, sharpen my skills and explore my interests more fully. These experiences have helped me feel prepared and confident as I work toward a career in electrical engineering in technology.

What do you enjoy the most about the Honors Program?
What I enjoy most about the Honors Program is the close-knit community and the opportunity to work closely with professors and motivated peers. It challenges me academically, allows me to grow personally and prepares me for my future career in electrical engineering in technology.

Who has been one of your favorite instructors/professors and why? What course did they teach?
One of my favorite instructors has been Sundiata Djata, who taught BKST 200. I appreciated how he made the material engaging and encouraged us to think critically about history, culture and social systems. His guidance and support helped me grow academically and personally, and the class gave me a deeper understanding of the topics that matter to me both in and out of the classroom.

How have you benefited by attending class regularly?
Attending class regularly has helped me stay engaged, understand the material more deeply and keep up with assignments. It also gives me the chance to ask questions, participate in discussions and connect with professors and classmates, which has made my learning experience more meaningful and helped me succeed academically.

Where is your favorite spot on campus or in the community? Why are you drawn to it?
My favorite spot on campus is the Holmes Student Center. I’m drawn to it because it’s a place where I can connect with friends, relax between classes and get involved in student organizations like BMI and the Black Student Union. It’s become a space where I feel part of the community and can balance both academic and personal growth.

What advice would you give to a student who is researching colleges to apply to?
My advice would be to look for a school that fits your goals, interests and values, not just the name or reputation. Visit campuses if you can, talk to students and faculty, and think about where you’ll feel supported and challenged. Find a place that offers the resources, programs and community that will help you grow academically and personally.

Why is a college education important to you?
College is important because it is my opportunity to show others what I am truly capable of. It is my way forward, and I want to spread the wealth of knowledge with others. Hopefully, it will encourage others to want to pursue excellence.

What strategies do you use to manage your time between the responsibilities of school, work, friends and family?
I manage my time by planning ahead and prioritizing what needs to get done each day. I use calendars and to-do lists to stay organized and make sure I dedicate time to school, work, friends and family. I also set aside time for breaks and self-care, which helps me stay focused and balance all my responsibilities without getting overwhelmed.

How do you stay informed about events and services that are available on campus?
I stay informed about events and services on campus by checking my NIU email account, following campus organizations on social media and staying connected with the organizations I’m involved in, such as BMI, the Black Student Union and NSBE. Being active in these groups and around campus also helps me learn about opportunities and resources.

What do you do to relax or recharge?
To relax and recharge, I like hanging around the student center and going to the Recreation Center with friends. Spending time with others and staying active helps me unwind and reset from the stress of school.

Please tell us about your job and hobbies.
Along with my responsibilities as a student, I stay involved on campus and balance my time with activities I enjoy. My hobbies include spending time at the student center, going to the Rec Center with friends and staying active. These activities help me maintain balance, build relationships and stay motivated.
