Why did you choose to attend NIU?
For convenience and because NIU offered a program in my field of interest.

What did you want to be when you were growing up? Are you pursuing that as a major, or have you taken another path?
I didn’t have a clear idea of what I wanted to be when I was growing up. It wasn’t until I gained real-world work experience that I discovered my true passion for instructional design and training. That path led me to pursue my degree in instructional technology, training and evaluation, where I can turn that passion into a meaningful career.

What is your major (and/or minor) and why did you decide on this course of study?
My major is applied management with an emphasis in instructional technology, training and evaluation. I chose this program because after working in the professional world, I realized how much I enjoy developing others through training and learning opportunities. This course of study gives me the tools to design and deliver effective learning experiences, while also strengthening my leadership and management skills for future career growth.

What has your experience as an online student at NIU been like?
My experience as an online student at NIU has been both engaging and supportive. Even though I’m not physically on campus, I’ve felt connected through Blackboard, my instructors’ communication and opportunities like the Online Student Advisory Committee. Balancing coursework with my career has been challenging at times, but the program is designed in a way that makes it manageable and rewarding.

What has benefited you most as an online student?
The flexibility has been the biggest benefit. Being able to work at my own pace and on my own schedule allows me to continue growing in my career while earning my degree. I’ve also found that the online structure has helped me become more organized and disciplined, skills I can apply in both my studies and my professional life.

What is your number one tip for students thinking about online education?
My number one tip is to stay organized and build a routine early on. Online learning gives you a lot of freedom, but that also means you have to hold yourself accountable. Make time each week for your coursework, communicate with your instructors and don’t be afraid to reach out for help or to connect with your classmates. You’ll get more out of the experience when you stay engaged.

What has been something you have found pleasantly surprising about your experience at NIU?
The application process was smoother than butter. I had no issues with paperwork, student aid or getting started. On top of that, the faculty have been nothing but supportive and communicative. When I have a question, I get an answer. I’ve also been pleasantly surprised by how quickly I’ve been able to apply what I’m learning in class to my career right now.

How have you connected with other students to study for classes, meet new people or form new friendships?
So far, I’ve mainly connected with classmates through Blackboard discussions and group activities. While my program is fully online, I’m excited to start making new connections that will carry on beyond school.

Are you involved in any student organizations, mentoring programs or extra-curricular activities? If so, which ones? How have they added to your experience as a Huskie?
I recently joined the Online Student Advisory Committee (OSAC), and I’m really excited about it. Since I’m an out-of-state online student, OSAC gives me another way to connect with NIU, share my perspective and feel like part of the Huskie community.

What NIU offices, departments or resources have helped you feel safe, supported and successful? And how?
Financial aid has been a huge help. They’ve been friendly, quick to respond and very supportive in making sure I understood everything I needed to get started smoothly.

Are there transfer-specific resources, offices or services that you use to help you succeed at NIU?
Yes, my academic advisor was great in helping me review how my transfer credits applied. They were very friendly and made the process clear and easy to understand.

Who has been one of your favorite instructors/professors and why? What course did they teach?
I can’t say I have a favorite just yet, since I’ve only started my first semester and have had three classes so far. But I’ve already appreciated how communicative and supportive my professors have been.

How have you benefited by attending class regularly?
Even though my program is online, consistently logging into Blackboard and staying engaged has made a big difference. Attending regularly keeps me on track with coursework, helps me better retain what I’m learning and makes it easier to apply concepts right away in my career.

What advice would you give to a student who is researching colleges to apply to?
Look for a school that not only offers the program you want, but also supports you as a whole student. I chose NIU because the faculty, advisors and resources made the process feel smooth and supportive from day one. Pay attention to how a university communicates with you during the application process — it’s usually a good sign of the support you’ll get as a student.

Why is a college education important to you?
A college education is important to me because it helps me turn my passion for instructional design and training into a real career path. Beyond the degree itself, it’s about building skills, creating opportunities and setting an example that hard work and perseverance pay off.

What strategies do you use to manage your time between the responsibilities of school, work, friends and family?
Time management is all about structure for me. I rely on planners, to-do lists and setting aside specific times for coursework around my work schedule. I also try to set clear boundaries. When it’s school time, I focus on school; when it’s work, I focus on work. That balance keeps me accountable without feeling overwhelmed.

How do you stay informed about events and services that are available on campus?
As an online student, I stay informed through Blackboard announcements and email from NIU. Even though I’m out of state, I make sure to read updates and check in regularly, so I don’t miss out on opportunities or resources.

What do you do to relax or recharge?
I recharge by spending time outdoors, working on creative projects and taking a step back from screens whenever possible. Even something as simple as a walk or listening to music helps me reset and refocus.

Please tell us about your job and hobbies.
I currently work in community association management, where I oversee operations and resident engagement. I’ve also gained experience in training and development, which directly connects to my studies. Outside of work, I am a commissioned remote online notary. I enjoy learning new skills through professional development and find creative outlets in design projects and community involvement.
