What did you want to be when you were growing up? Are you pursuing that as a major, or have you taken another path?
I always knew I wanted to work for myself, even as a kid. I didn’t know exactly what that would look like back then, but I was always drawn to creating, planning and leading. Now, I’m majoring in business management with a focus on social responsibility and entrepreneurship, so I’d say I’m definitely on the path to making that dream a reality.

What is your major (and/or minor) and why did you decide on this course of study?
My major is management with a focus on social responsibility and entrepreneurship, and I’m also pursuing a minor in social entrepreneurship. I chose this path because I’ve always wanted to work for myself and create businesses that not only generate income but also give back to the community. I believe in building something meaningful that creates opportunities for others, especially in underserved areas.

What has been something you have found pleasantly surprising about your experience at NIU?
Something I’ve found pleasantly surprising about my experience at NIU is the relationships I’ve built through networking events. I didn’t expect to connect with so many like-minded, driven people, both students and professionals, who genuinely want to support each other. Those connections have opened up opportunities and helped me grow, both personally and professionally.

How have you connected with other students to study for classes, meet new people or form new friendships?
I’ve actually made some great friendships at NIU. I’ve connected with other students through group projects, campus events and student organizations. Those connections have really made my college experience more enjoyable and supportive.

Are you involved in any student organizations, mentoring programs or extra-curricular activities? If so, which ones? How have they added to your experience as a Huskie?
Yes, I’m involved in several student organizations and programs that have really shaped my experience as a Huskie. I’m the president of the Black Business Student Association (BBSA), a member of the John Henrik Clarke Honor Society and the honors program, and I also serve as a mentor. These roles have helped me grow as a leader, connect with amazing students and faculty, and give back to the NIU community in meaningful ways.

What NIU offices, departments or resources have helped you feel safe, supported and successful? And how?
The Center for Black Studies has been one of the biggest sources of support for me at NIU. It’s a space where I feel seen, heard and understood. They’ve provided me with resources, encouragement and a strong sense of community that’s helped me feel safe, supported and empowered to succeed.

What Honors Program opportunities or support have helped you get closer to your academic or career goals so far?
Being part of the John Henrik Clarke Honor Society and the University Honors Program has helped me stay focused and motivated academically. The support, mentorship and access to exclusive events and opportunities have pushed me to challenge myself and think bigger when it comes to my goals. These programs have definitely brought me closer to where I want to be in my career and as a leader.

What do you enjoy the most about the Honors Program?
What I enjoy most about the honors program is the chance to learn from inspiring leaders and have experiences that go beyond the regular classroom. Taking a leadership class with Dennis Barsema was one of the highlights; I learned a lot about myself and the type of leader I want to be. It pushed me to think differently and gave me tools I’ll carry into my future career.

Who has been one of your favorite instructors/professors and why? What course did they teach?
One of my favorite instructors has been Elizabeth Grant from accounting. She was so nice, always helpful and had a way of breaking down accounting concepts so they actually made sense in the real world. When my dad passed away during the semester, she was incredibly supportive, and I’ll never forget the kindness she showed me during that time.

How have you benefited by attending class regularly?
Attending class regularly has helped me stay on top of my work, build stronger relationships with my professors and really understand the material. It keeps me focused and accountable, and it’s made a big difference in how confident I feel going into exams or working on projects. Being present also helps me stay connected to the class and catch important tips or updates that you might miss.

Where is your favorite spot on campus or in the community? Why are you drawn to it?
One of my favorite spots on campus is the Holmes Student Center by the fireplace. It’s a calm and comfortable space where I can unwind, focus on homework or talk with other students. The atmosphere just feels welcoming.

What advice would you give to a student who is researching colleges to apply to?
My advice would be to look beyond just academics and to think about the support systems, student organizations and overall environment a school offers. Choose a college where you feel like you’ll be seen, supported and given opportunities to grow. Visit the campus if you can, talk to current students and trust your gut feeling about where you belong.

Why is a college education important to you?
A college education is important to me because it opens doors, not just for my career, but also for personal growth and building a better future. As a first-generation student, it also means breaking cycles and setting an example for my daughter and my community.

What strategies do you use to manage your time between the responsibilities of school, work, friends and family?
To manage my time, I use any free moment I have to get homework done and try not to leave anything to the last minute. I write everything down in my schedule to stay organized and make sure I don’t miss deadlines. Staying on top of things helps me balance school, work and family, while still making time for friends.

How do you stay informed about events and services that are available on campus?
I stay informed about events and services on campus through Huskie Hub, Instagram, LinkedIn and word of mouth. Following student organizations and departments helps me stay in the loop. A lot of great opportunities come just from talking to people and staying connected.

What do you do to relax or recharge?
To relax and recharge, I take time to meditate and pray, which helps me refocus and find peace. Spending quality time with my daughter is also a big part of how I unwind; she brings me peace and joy no matter how busy life gets. She also reminds me of what really matters.

Please tell us about your job and hobbies.
I run my own beauty business where I specialize in waxing services, and I absolutely love what I do. In my free time, I enjoy spending time with my family, watching documentaries and diving into anything beauty-related, whether it’s makeup, hair or learning new techniques.

Is there anything else you'd like to share about your NIU Huskie story?
One thing I’d like to share about my NIU Huskie story is how much I’ve grown since I started here. From leading student organizations to building real connections and navigating challenges, NIU has truly shaped me into a stronger, more confident version of myself. I’m proud to be part of a community that supports growth, leadership and purpose.
