What scholarships did you receive and why did you receive them? How has the financial support impacted your experience at NIU?
I have been fortunate to receive several scholarships during my time at NIU, including the MIA/POW Scholarship, the GI Bill, an NIU merit scholarship and the Ruth Ashelford Pollock Scholarship. I was awarded the MIA/POW Scholarship and the GI Bill in recognition of my father, Joshua Byer, who proudly served in the U.S. Marine Corps, something I am deeply honored by and grateful for. The NIU merit scholarship was awarded based on my academic performance, and the Ruth Ashelford Pollock Scholarship recognized my status as the child of a disabled veteran.
What did you want to be when you were growing up? Are you pursuing that as a major, or have you taken another path?
Growing up, I wanted to be many things, but more than anything, I wanted to be a garbage collector. I loved how happy they always seemed when coming by and was fascinated by the machinery they used. While I don’t think I’ll be pursuing this as a career, I still have a strong interest in recycling and waste management. I hope to have a career similar in spirit, one where I can connect with my community, build meaningful relationships and make people smile every day.
What is your major (and/or minor) and why did you decide on this course of study?
I’m a senior majoring in management with an emphasis in leadership. I chose this course of study because I wanted a path that offered versatility and growth, something that would open doors to many different opportunities, which it absolutely has. I’ve always loved working with people and leading teams, so focusing on leadership felt like the perfect fit. I’ve also been inspired by several incredible peers, mentors and professors in the program whose passion and success have motivated me to follow in their footsteps and continue growing as a leader.
Have you conducted an internship?
Yes
How did you get your internship, and where was it?
I most recently completed an internship with Rich Harvest Farms in Sugar Grove, Illinois. I first learned about the opportunity from my professor, Dr. Lan Li, who mentioned it in one of her classes a few semesters ago. Later, I discovered the internship posting online and decided to apply. I went through the interview process and was offered the position in the spring of 2025.
How did your internship help prepare you for your career?
My internship as a hospitality associate (intern) at Rich Harvest Farms taught me so much about business, hospitality and the vast range of opportunities within these industries. I think it has prepared me for any work opportunity. Before applying, I didn’t know much, if anything, about working in this sector of business beyond the fact that I loved making people’s days brighter and spending time at the driving range on sunny days. Coming into this type of work uneducated on golf taught me that with enough passion, dedication and a willingness to learn, I can succeed in anything I put my mind to.
What has been something you have found pleasantly surprising about your experience at NIU?
I’ve been pleasantly surprised by how willing people at NIU are to help and support me. I’ve been able to build close relationships with people across campus, especially my professors. Since NIU is a larger university, I didn’t expect to receive such personal support from so many people. Throughout my time here, I’ve been given opportunities I never could have imagined, and people have been more than willing to guide and encourage me along the way. One experience that really stood out to me was in my Business Calculus class with Professor Allison O’Connor. Despite teaching a large lecture hall, she took the time to meet with me multiple times outside of class to tutor me personally and find creative ways to help me understand the material. That experience showed me how deeply NIU professors care about their students’ success. I’ve found that same level of support and understanding from many of my instructors, and it’s made my time at NIU truly special.
How have you connected with other students to study for classes, meet new people or form new friendships?
If you know me personally, you know I’m a very outgoing and extroverted person. I love meeting new people and building connections wherever I go. I’ve made it a goal to befriend at least one new person in every class I’ve taken at NIU, which has helped me build a supportive network of classmates and study partners. Getting involved on campus has also played a huge role in helping me connect with others. Through NIU volleyball, campus events and my on-campus jobs, I’ve met so many amazing people who’ve become both friends and sources of encouragement throughout my college journey.
Are you involved in any student organizations, mentoring programs or extra-curricular activities? If so, which ones? How have they added to your experience as a Huskie?
I’ve been involved in several organizations during my time at NIU. I previously served as the SCRO for the Women’s Volleyball Club, which has been one of my favorite experiences. It allowed me to develop strong leadership skills, form close relationships and continue a hobby I’m truly passionate about. I’ve also been involved in the Student Hospitality Association, where I participated in field trips, industry presentations and professional networking events. In addition, I’m a member of the Business Administration Student Association, the Innovation Club and the Philosophy Club. I make it a point to stay up to date on Huskie Hub and attend events that align with my interests or fit my schedule. Getting involved in a variety of organizations has allowed me to grow both personally and professionally while connecting with many incredible people across campus.
What NIU offices, departments or resources have helped you feel safe, supported and successful? And how?
I work for Career Services, and they’ve truly been the most impactful resource for me on campus. I’ve never felt so supported or learned so much through a work experience. My supervisors have continuously challenged me with meaningful tasks and provided opportunities that have helped me grow as a leader, whether through presenting to students, collaborating on large events or connecting with industry professionals. Beyond the professional development, I’ve also built genuine relationships there that I’m incredibly thankful for. In addition to Career Services, I’ve had the chance to connect with several other amazing departments across campus. I especially love working with our neighbors in the CHANCE Program, as well as having a relationship with Military and Veterans Services and Counseling and Consultation Services. Each has played a role in helping me feel supported, valued and connected within the NIU community.
Who has been one of your favorite instructors/professors and why? What course did they teach?
This is a very difficult question, as I’ve had so many incredible professors at NIU. A few that stand out are Professor Anissa Kuhar, Dr. Bart Sharp, Dr. Lan Li, Daniel Kohen and John Boswell. I particularly loved each of their classes for different reasons. Professor Kuhar’s dedication to her students is unmatched. Without her class, I likely wouldn’t have chosen to study in the College of Business. Dr. Sharp inspired me through his passion for teaching, openness to all perspectives and genuine care for his students’ growth. His class truly deepened my understanding of leadership and entrepreneurship. Dr. Li has also been a tremendous influence, showing consistent dedication to her students’ success, especially when it comes to career opportunities, internships and professional development. Daniel Kohen and John Boswell taught one of my favorite classes at NIU. They taught me so much about food service, hospitality management and the importance of teamwork, all while making the experience incredibly fun and engaging. Their class was the perfect blend of learning and hands-on experience, and I’m so grateful for everything I gained from it.
How have you benefited by attending class regularly?
I’ve found that attending class regularly has a huge impact on my academic success. When I’m consistently in class, my grades improve significantly because I’m more engaged and up to date on assignments and discussions. Many professors also share valuable insights, clarify expectations and even offer extra-credit opportunities during class you might miss otherwise. When I am present, it allows me to ask questions, stay motivated and better understand the material, something that’s much harder to do when trying to catch up after an absence.
Where is your favorite spot on campus or in the community? Why are you drawn to it?
My favorite spot on campus is definitely the library! I love finding a quiet corner where I can settle in, focus and get my schoolwork done. It’s such a peaceful space that helps me feel productive and grounded. Plus, as a huge bagel fan, having Einstein Bros. Bagels right downstairs is a major bonus!
What advice would you give to a student who is researching colleges to apply to?
I would tell students who are researching colleges to start by figuring out what’s most important to them, whether that’s being close to home, affordability, academic opportunities or campus culture. I’d also encourage them to talk to current students or alumni to get a real sense of what life at the university is like and most importantly, to visit when they can.
Why is a college education important to you?
I’m a firm believer that education is the key to success. While I absolutely believe that you can be successful without college, and I’m a strong supporter of trade schools, I think college uniquely transforms how you think, interact and see the world. Learning itself is the true key. I also recognize that not everyone has access to this opportunity. I’m incredibly thankful that through my dad’s service in the U.S. Marine Corps, I was given the chance to attend a university. I know this is a privilege many people don’t have. Through my travels, I’ve met individuals from all walks of life who weren’t as fortunate, and I carry their stories with me as motivation to make the most of my education.
What strategies do you use to manage your time between the responsibilities of school, work, friends and family?
Time management is a skill I’ve developed through years of balancing work, school and personal commitments. Having worked for most of my life, I’ve learned the importance of structure and planning to maintain balance. One of the most effective strategies I use is keeping a detailed planner, both physical and digital. I rely heavily on Google Calendar to track classes, work shifts, deadlines and personal commitments, ensuring I never overbook myself or take on more than I can manage. I also make a point to schedule time for relationships and self-care. For example, I regularly plan phone calls with my family to stay connected despite our busy schedules. One small tradition I cherish is playing Wordle with my grandma every day. It’s a simple yet meaningful way to stay close while managing a full schedule. These routines help me stay organized, grounded and connected to the people who matter most.
How do you stay informed about events and services that are available on campus?
I stay informed about events and services on campus through a variety of networks and platforms. My favorite is LinkedIn, where I follow several NIU departments and organizations to stay updated on upcoming events and opportunities. I also keep up with other social media platforms and follow campus organizations that frequently post about events, resources and involvement opportunities. Additionally, working in the Peters Campus Life Building gives me a unique advantage. I often see event flyers and announcements on the bulletin boards right outside our office. I also make a point to check the bulletin boards at the Holmes Student Center when I’m working in dining or catering, or even when I’m just studying there. These spaces are always filled with great information about what’s happening across campus and help me stay connected and involved in the NIU community. Through programs like Career Launchpad and Business Passport, I also find myself attending a wide variety of events across campus. Whether it’s a professional development workshop, networking event or student organization activity, I enjoy being involved and taking advantage of the many opportunities NIU has to offer.
What do you do to relax or recharge?
Even with a busy schedule of work and classes, I’ve found a healthy balance by using academic breaks to explore new places and recharge through travel. During the school year, I make time to relax by going to the movies every Tuesday at AMC in DeKalb, taking yoga classes and trying new restaurants with my friends. I also love cozy nights in watching movies and TV, and I make it a point to take weekends here and there to spend quality time with my family. Those moments help me reset and stay grounded.
Please tell us about your job and hobbies.
My biggest hobby is travel! Fun fact: I’ve been to over 30 countries in the past two years, all solo, with just me and my backpack. Most of my favorite trips have been the unplanned ones. I love going places without an itinerary and seeing where each day takes me. It’s hard to pick a favorite destination, but some standouts have been Sarandë, Albania; Marrakesh, Morocco; Rome, Italy; and Nice, France. In addition to travel, I’ve completed a variety of workaway experiences in places like Hawaii, Mexico, Croatia and Guatemala, where I’ve worked as a bartender, helped with social media and marketing, and even nannied for local families. These experiences taught me how to adapt quickly, connect with people from all walks of life and embrace new cultures with an open mind. As for my work, I’ve held a variety of roles during my time at NIU. I currently serve as a career peer advisor at NIU Career Services, a server and bartender at Florentino’s Charhouse, and a catering and events intern with NIU catering and dining services, where I’ve also bartended for special events like NIU founders dinners and alumni celebrations. I’ve also completed internships with Rich Harvest Farms and the DeKalb County Convention and Visitors Bureau, and I previously worked as a campus team member for NIU Victoria’s Secret PINK and as a bartender at Molly’s Eatery and Drinkery. On top of that, I still make time to help out occasionally at my hometown job with 3 Headed Monster BBQ, where I occasionally work on the food truck or help prep meats. Outside of work and travel, I am a nanny for a wonderful family in Sycamore. I’ve been with them since their oldest, Olive, was just a few months old, and now she’s starting pre-K! Watching Olive and her brother, Leo, grow up has been one of the most rewarding parts of my life.
