Alcohol Service Request

The service of alcohol at NIU events, regardless of funding source or location, must be reviewed and approved by Risk Management and the vice president of administration and finance. The approval of alcohol service is based upon the event’s adherence to the Board of Trustees Alcoholic Beverage Policy.

For alcohol service requests, complete and submit the form below. Please be aware this process is for alcohol service only. This review does not serve as approval or denial of the event itself or funding of the event.

Alcohol Guidelines and Procedures

In accordance with the Northern Illinois University Board of Trustees (BOT) Alcoholic Beverage Policy. the university has established standard procedures for the review and approval of alcoholic beverage sale or service at certain university functions.

Only the following types of events, at which alcohol will be sold, served, or otherwise made available by the university, are subject to the review procedures outlined herein:

  • Events which occur on campus or other university-controlled property; and
  • Events at which students may comprise the majority of attendees or the event may otherwise be deemed a student-centered function.

These procedures have been delegated by the president, vice president/chief financial officer to the Office of Risk Management. Should an event fall within one of the two categories above, please complete the Alcohol Service Request prior to the event.

Sale and Distribution Guidelines

All university employees and agents are expected to adhere to the BOT Alcoholic Beverage Policy and only allow the distribution of alcohol in a setting that allows for appropriate controls. All members of the university community are responsible for full awareness of the requirements of Federal and Illinois statutes and local ordinances concerning the consumption, possession, and sale of alcohol. The university expects each member of the community to be responsible for his or her own conduct and the consequences of that conduct. Illinois law prohibits the consumption or possession of alcohol by persons under the age of 21 and the supplying of alcohol to any person under the age of 21.

The university prohibits all students and employees from the unlawful manufacture, possession, use, distribution, sale, or purchase of alcohol on university premises or as part of any university events. Alcohol service at strictly student-centered events without any academic, networking or other business/professional purpose is strictly forbidden.

Sufficient amounts of non-alcoholic beverages and food must be available at university events where alcohol is served or sold. The sponsoring department is responsible for ensuring attendees do not bring their own alcohol to an event or leave any NIU premises with alcohol from the event.

Please contact Risk Management at riskmanagement@niu.edu with any questions pertaining to these procedures and guidelines.
